Release and reception
The single according to the official website was set to go on Digital Download on 29 September and on CD release on 06 October. Contrary to the official statements, the single was available to download via iTunes a week before, on 20 September.

Popjustice wrote that "one of the clever things about the track is that as well as not sounding like anything the Sugababes have done before while simultaneously sounding like a brilliant Sugababes single it also fits in perfectly with the brassy, Ronsonised soul sound of pop in 2008 (well, 2007) but, unlike a lot of stuff cluttering up the music industry at the moment, it doesn't sound like it's trying too hard to pull the sound off - one of the Sugababes' main selling points has always been how effortless their hitmaking seems, and it's a theme that continues with "Girls".

The Guardian wrote a less favourable review, saying, "One listen to the Sugababes' new single confirms all my suspicions. They've gone from an out there, edgy pop band to being as predictable as Atomic Kitten. Girls nicks its trumpets from Mark Ronson, its feminist message from Destiny's Child and its chorus from a Boots advert. It's the kind of assembly line, girl-band fodder that has seen them fade into the background while the likes of Girls Aloud take their place in the world of unpredictable, forward-thinking pop. With their famous conveyor-belt members policy, you might think that they've valued the Sugababes "brand" above any quality control. Where, we asked ourselves at the time, was the Numan splice-up of Freak Like Me, or the poised pop of Overload? But by now they seemed more concerned with their range of Mattel dolls and their brand of shoes. Certainly the music that former members Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy made after their departures from the group, suggests that they took the creative spark with them"

Music video
On the 28 August British newspaper Daily Mirror posted an article with pictures from the video showing the babes pole dancing in a club like scene." The music video for "Girls" premiered on Channel 4 on 6 September 2008 at 11:25. It features the girls pole-dancing in what seems to be an alternative club, focusing more on the other dancers during the chorus and on the girls while singing their verses. During her verses, Amelle Berrabah engages sensual dance moves with one of the fellow female dancers, making this one of the most provocative videos the girls have ever done.
