Neoplan USA filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2006, listing assets of $13.7 million and debts of $59 million, after closing its manufacturing plant in 2006.

In its last few months of operation, Neoplan had fallen on hard times, such as warranty issues with San Francisco's [[MUNI]], and with the cash-flow problems after Boston [[MBTA]] canceled order over bus deliveries. <ref>[http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/provider/providerarticle.aspx?feed=AP&Date=20061228&ID=6305906 Page expired - MSN Money<!-- Bot generated title -->]</ref>

The company still technically exists while sale of the Neopart parts business is pending. Once Neopart is sold, the company will officially cease to exist.
