Anji Mito is a character in the Guilty Gear fighting game series, making his first appearance in the second game, Guilty Gear X: By Your Side. He is an escaped Japanese, and because of that is being pursued by the Post-War Administration Bureau. A curious and friendly man, he is wielder of the legendary Zessen (Stopping) fans, one of the “jinki” of Outrage.

Gameplay
Anji fights with fans and an umbrella. Though the fans themselves look normal, they expand and contract. If used correctly, can actually “stop” your opponents move and allow you to counterattack, hence the name “Stopping Fans”. He can also summon Qi-like butterflies, which explode on contact. Should the opponent block it, it’ll rise and fall back down as a phoenix.

His umbrella can launch his enemies for either an aerial combo or just to fend them away. And like many of the other characters, he isn’t fond of kicking. But he does have a stomp-like move.

Background
Anji is among the few people born of Japanese descent. And because of that, is protected by the government, like an endangered species. Though there are those who accept this lifestyle, Anji doesn’t. To him, you might as well be living in a cage in a zoo. So to regain his freedom, he escaped from his colony and pursued That Man for answers for his ever-curious mind.

No one knows exactly how he heard of That Man and the gears themselves. Nor do they know how he got a hold of the Zessen fans.

Guilty Gear X: By Your Side
Guilty Gear XX: The Midnight Carnival
In this game, Anji is trying to find "That Man" to ask him about the gears. In one ending he defeats I-No and "That Man" offers to tell him what he wants to know (in the ending picture that man has his hand extended towards Anji, revealing that his skin is Blue). In another ending he fights a brainwashed Chipp, before fighting with a Robo-Ky, and upon learning of the hunt for people of Japanese descent feels that he needs to protect Baiken. In the third ending he fights Ky (whom he mistakes as Robo-Ky), and then learns that someone is trying to capture him. Ky tells him to lie low.

Music References
Anji-Mito's theme song, "Fuuga", is based on a Mötley Crüe song, "Live Wire". Also, his "Shitsu" projectile bears a distinct resemblance to Aerosmith's logo when transformed. The name "Anji" is most likely a reference to the instrumental guitar piece titled "Anji" written by Davy Graham. The song is also known as Angi, or Angie, but Anji is how the song appears when Simon and Garfunkel covered the song on their album Sounds of Silence.

Trivia
* Anji is afraid of growing old. Therefore, hates it when May and Bridget call him “ojisan”, which is “uncle” in Japanese.
* Many assume Anji is too “girly” or feminine”, when in fact is very masculine in Japanese culture. Here are 2 examples:
1) His fans are considered masculine because in older times they were used to command troops in battle, and denote people of high stature.<br>
2) The butterflies he launches are symbols of good/bad omens and also symbolize the souls of the dead.
* Anji is one of the few characters that wears glasses. It is not known if he really does need them for sight or just uses them for fashion sense.
