Retired
This user is no longer active on Wikipedia.

It's hard to say goodbye to a community that I have been a part of for seven years. During my time as a contributor to Wikipedia, I have grown tremendously as a writer, and have added in many ways, large and small, to countless numbers of articles, and have participated in countless numbers of discussions. However, I have come to realize within the past year that I have reached both the limits of what I can accomplish within the Wikipedia community, and also the limits of my patience in interacting with other members of the Wikipedia community. Thus I feel that it is time for me to move on.

While I still believe in Wikipedia's mission to amass the sum of all human knowledge, I fear that the project may fail because the community will, over time, destroy itself due to what I perceive as constant infighting, the holding of long-term grudges by many users, and general rudeness and incivility on the part of many, which has an alienating effect on other users, both new and seasoned. As an administrator, I received more abuse than I would ever wish on anyone that is doing volunteer work, and this often extended beyond Wikipedia to my website, my Facebook, my Twitter, and my personal email, despite my best efforts to direct all Wikipedia-related inquiries back to Wikipedia. Because of this, I was never really able to escape from Wikipedia, even when using it for research, and it took a toll on me, turning what might otherwise have been an enjoyable activity into a chore, causing me to dread seeing the orange "You have new messages" bar come up, because it inevitably meant having to listen to more whining.

I soon found it increasingly difficult for me to justify to myself why I was still doing volunteer work for a project that I no longer found enjoyable. When I logged out of Wikipedia by choice and left it logged out, I soon came to realize that by not participating in Wikipedia, my stress levels went down, and I generally found myself to be much happier.

I believe that my best days are still ahead of me, but now it is time for me to forge my own path, endeavoring in new works and projects separate from those of the Wikipedia community. I wish all of you the best in your future endeavors, and perhaps our paths will cross again some day. SchuminWeb (Talk) 06:49, 20 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Response Please

Pinkadelica was helpful however in contacting you as you requested on my talk page, you never responded. I would like to resolve the issue here with being blocked. You responding would be most helpful and appreciated.

Thank you,

Star5279 (talk) 15:43, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You registered a new username - the problem relating to the block was that the username itself was misleading, indicating an association with an organization, possibly giving the appearance of a group account, and so that's why it was blocked. It says nothing about your conduct or otherwise. Your Star5279 account is fine, and I wish you many years' worth of editing with it. SchuminWeb (Talk) 16:33, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your Information

You placed on the following:

"Israelite School of Universal Practical Knowledge (ISUPK) is a non-profit organization based in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. The group is part of the Hebrew Israelism movement which regards American Blacks as the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel."

Neither Southern Poverty Law Center article states the above.

"History of Hebrew Israelism". Southern Poverty Law Center. Retrieved on 2008-09-08.

>States," Although followers of Black Judaism thought of themselves as the descendants of the biblical 12 tribes of Israel"

I understand that any one can add information to any page however can it be correctly, directly quoted from the source that is it gathered from?

Star5279 (talk) 16:17, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not inclined to get involved in that article - I just said it didn't qualify for speedy deletion. Please take that concern to Talk:Israelite School of Universal Practical Knowledge. SchuminWeb (Talk) 16:34, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SysStats page deletion

Hi,

You deleted the SysStats page. It was marked for speedy deletion because of possible copyright infringment. I followed the procedure that the notice said (which was to put a Template:HoldOn tag in the entry and add an explanation to the talk page. The talk page said that I was also the author of the original text, but that anyway I had changed the whole entry to avoid a possibly lengthy bout of trying to prove copyright ownership.

The resulting entry, although it covered the same topic, was completely different than the text that caused the copyright violation message.

So I guess I don't really understand why you went ahead and deleted it anyway. More pertinently, can you restore it? Since I will now have to go ahead and rewrite the whole entry again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mpandrews (talkcontribs)

I've gone ahead and given you back the last three revisions (only) of SysStats, which begins the non-infringing material, where the infringing material was wiped out. SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:27, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Favor request

Since I saw you do it...how do you archive a talk page? Wikipedia's FAQ page on the topic make no darned sense whatsoever. Lots42 (talk) 20:57, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are two ways to do it and not break the GFDL. One is to manually copy and paste to an archive page and leave a note in the history of where the stuff went/came from, or have a bot do the same. I'm not too fond of it because it leaves the history with the related diffs in one place and the finished comments in another, rather than keeping it all in one place.
The other way, which I do, is to move the content and the history to an archive page using the page move function ("move" tag at the top). Thus I move the page from User talk:SchuminWeb to User talk:SchuminWeb/Archive 13 as in the most recent case. Then I "open" a new talk page by editing the redirect on the original location that the move function left behind to remove the redirect and put my header back in. And that's all there is to it.
Make sense? SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:32, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks but no...it makes no sense at all. I'll try and figure it out later. Lots42 (talk) 08:31, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What specifically doesn't make sense? Let's see if we can't work through this... SchuminWeb (Talk) 14:40, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Everything after 'Two ways to do it'. Seriously. It's greek to me. What's a GFDL? Lots42 (talk) 20:29, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"GFDL" stands for GNU Free Documentation License, and it's the free content license under which all Wikipedia content is provided. In order to stay in compliance with that license, you have to preserve the revision history of pages (i.e. the "history" tab), and when stuff is moved around, we have to be able to locate and access that history.
Otherwise, with that in mind, you can either cut-and-paste the old talk to a new page and document where it came from/went to on both pages, or you can just do a page-move like you would for an article. That's really all there is to it. Does that clarify things? I hope so... SchuminWeb (Talk) 03:32, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Undoing your reversions of BoredOut

Hey, I disagree with your multiple reversions of BoredOut's edits. The edits added NRHP Travel Itinerary pages to relevant articles. I had 2 or 3 on my watchlist, see you deleted many more. If your point is that you want a more specific article linked rather than the general page, you could have made that point some other way. Anyhow, i restored an external link to the Effie M. Morrissey page, pointing to the more specific rather than the general one. Please don't revert me, feel free to discuss. And stop, urself, please. doncram (talk) 16:11, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion perhaps best at User talk:BoredOut, which i didn't read first, sorry. I think it would be helpful if you would clarify to BoredOut, and to midnightdreary and me, that if BoredOut' added specific NRHP webpages that correspond exactly to specific wikipedia articles (like the Ernestina NRHP travel itinerary page corresponds exactly to the Effie Morrissey article), then that would be okay. And it would be helpful if you clarify that BoredOut should discuss somewhere, e.g. there at the talkpage. I suspect BoredOut does not understand a discussion could help resolve this. doncram (talk) 16:29, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, I have no problems with your reverting some of the articles. My rationale for the wholesale reversion was that, after going through a lot of them, all the ones I found were so broad and they were so similar to each other that it was basically linkspam for the National Park Service. And yes, you are correct - BoredOut should discuss. SchuminWeb (Talk) 18:53, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development

You deleted this page Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development saying it was a blatant copyright infringement - did you read the actual talk section stating we had permission to repost? I have full permission from the author of this information to create this Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHSMD) and re-post content that may also appear within their website. I emailed permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org with proof of permission. Did you delete this after having spoken to those at permissions-en? Or did you simply deem it "blatant copyright infringement" before permissions-en had a chance to verify? - dbrowell —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dbrowell (talkcontribs) 13:43, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's kind of a moot point anyway, though, because it also makes no assertion whatsoever of any shred of notability, so if not for G12, I'd speedy it under A7. SchuminWeb (Talk) 13:45, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This was also addressed in the talkback. You seriously didn't even read the talkback before you deleted it, did you? (I guess you've admitted as much.) Anyway, FYI the professional organization is larger and more notable than most professional organizations listed on Wikipedia, not to mention it's connection with the American Hospital Association. Your subjective comments on a "shred notability," while curt and snappy, are not very helpful in the discussion. Certainly a massive professional organization connected with every major hospital in the United States is more notable than the ghosttown Tanglewood Mall in Roanoke.Dbrowell (talk) 21:21, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AppleCare

Hi,

I noticed the article was dug up from the deletion graveyard. What is there to make out of it without pointing references to apple's website? 69.62.172.116 (talk) 21:51, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I forgot to sign in. JasonHockeyGuy (talk) 21:52, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One is allowed to include primary sources, along with third-party sources. It still needs more references, but it's certainly salvageable. That's one reason I rolled it back to revision #1. It's not blatant advertising, though the article certainly had its low point. SchuminWeb (Talk) 23:37, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Evan Almighty

Hi, thanks for continuing your efforts in reverting vandalism on the page. Could you take a look over the article and make sure there are no mistakes/errors so I can use the revision for the Version 0.7 release? I just did a preliminary cleanup sweep, but would appreciate a second set of eyes. If not, don't worry about it. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 08:32, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You deleted it as spam (which it clearly was at the time you deleted it), but that content was added in the past few days days (by spa/coi users, as you note) to a long-standing non-spamming stub. Could you undelete and revert to that older version? DMacks (talk) 18:57, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I actually deleted it as A7, which assumes good faith, but that it doesn't make any claim of notability. The article was tagged for G11, which assumes bad faith on the part of the editor. I've restored and rolled back the article, but I think it still doesn't make the cut, so I'm going to list it at AFD, so that the community can decide how to handle it. SchuminWeb (Talk) 19:03, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cereals Event

This is a huge trade show of significance to the UK agricultural community. It was referenced to several sources independent of the shows owners. I don't see any blatant advertising. Was it the content you were unhappy with? Bigup_sim (Talk) 12:31, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The deletion of Cereals Event makes no assumptions about notability. However, the way it was written was such that the nominating editor and myself both took it to be blatant advertising. You are more than welcome to write a neutral piece about the event. SchuminWeb (Talk) 18:39, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Country Club Tasmania

Why has this been deleted? It's Australia's only Country Club Casino and one of the first casino's to be built in Australia. So it get's deleted? Makes no sense. Country Club Tasmania also recently won the Best Entertainment Venue in Australia at the 2008 Australian Hotel Association National Awards for Excellence. It includes a; 18 hole championship golf course, Driving range (the only one in Launceston), Health Centre, Tennis and squash Courts, trout fishing, Horse Riding and Wildlife. Not to mention it also hosts major events in Launceston. By the way it also won Tasmania's Best Entertainment Venue at the AHA Awards for Excellence, 2007. Beating Wrest Point Casino in Hobart. Aaroncrick (talk) 22:45, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The full text of the article stated:
Country Club Tasmania is a casino in Launceston, Tasmania. It's located among rolling hills and natural bushland in the Southern Launceston suburb of Prospect Vale and is just short 10 minutes drive from the Launceston CBD in Tasmania's north. The architectural style and interior design of the hotel is modelled on the stately homes of South America.
Show me the assertion of notability in that article. SchuminWeb (Talk) 23:27, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lapsed admin looking for an update

Hello! I've recently found myself drawn back to helping out on Wikipedia after... jeez, a year and a half, close to 2 years of inactivity because of various life issues. I've been reading the various administrator pages to see what's new, but is there any major change to the blocking, warning, or whatever policies that I should know about? I figure I should ask people "in the field", so to speak, just to make sure I don't step on someone's toes accidentally. Thanks in advance, Mo0[talk] 19:24, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I guess the biggest change in two years is the presence of Twinkle, which simplifies many admin tasks, including warning and deletions and such. That and Friendly, which fills in what Twinkle doesn't do. Otherwise, though, in the year or so I've been an admin, blocking and warning and such are basically the same, with the templates looking a little jazzier and such. SchuminWeb (Talk) 19:29, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I actually found Twinkle, and I do so heart it a lot more than the buttons I had, which use some pretty aggressive wordage in the templates. Thanks for the recommendation, though, lets me know it's not a "rogue app" or something. I dunno, I'm weird like that. Good to hear that nothing else has really changed much, though, means I can jump right back in like nothing happened! Thanks, Mo0[talk] 19:37, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Telegate AG.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Telegate AG.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:43, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You quite properly deleted this one for copyvio on my nomination. I have been in discussion with the article's creator who is a representative of the artist's website. Article deletion - Frontier Economics

Dear Schuminweb, I am contacting you with regard to an article I believe you deleted in order to better understand the reasons for deletion. Firstly, as I'm new to Wikipedia, accept my apologies in advance if I'm in breach of any etiquette. The article I posted was a description of the company, Frontier Economics (an economics consultancy firm). The intention was to provide only a factual description of the company and I did read the “first article” guidelines and included relevant citations. My motivation was not in any way to advertise or promote said company. I also noted that several very similar companies (such as NERA and LECG) have Wikipedia articles. With the above in mind, I was hoping you might be able to advise me as to what specific elements of the article led to it being deleted? For example, was the inclusion of a link to the company’s website inappropriate? Any advice you could give me would be very much appreciated. Ideally, I would like to make improvements to the article, such that it was deemed acceptable for publication in Wikipedia. Many thanks in advance, Sam Williams. (Samwilliams Frontier (talk) 13:46, 24 September 2008 (UTC))[reply]

A second look at the Frontier Economics article indicates that I appear to be correct in my decision to delete as blatant advertising. Additionally, as it stands, it would also qualify for A7, as there is not even an assertion of notability. I see you are working on another version in your userspace. Keep working on that, and perhaps it will pass muster as a full article eventually. SchuminWeb (Talk) 14:54, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And indeed it was User:Cleo Coyle creating the deleted version as well. SchuminWeb (Talk) 00:07, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the deletion request for Image:Cat-cheezburgur-bird-2.jpg... in addition to the fact that it is based off of a copyright image (as explained in the image summary...in fact, I was the one who added the GNU license and proper credit to that summary; the original uploader was trying to pass it off as PD and say the image was his own work), it is also a violation of http://icanhascheezburger.com terms of use (as discussed at Talk:Lolcat#Removal of Image:Cat-cheezburgur-bird-2.jpg). Furthermore, it is orphaned: the only pages that link to it are within the original uploader's user space. I would strongly suggest deleting the image.

Thank you, —Politizer( talk | contribs ) 01:35, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've taken it to PUI. SchuminWeb (Talk) 01:41, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks! —Politizer( talk | contribs ) 01:45, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You deleted this page because it was a redirect to a deleted page; it's a user talk page, redirected to the user page, and it mentions the category, though I'm not sure why you thought it was redirecting to the category; even it was in CSD, it was clearly redirecting to his user page. --Golbez (talk) 03:27, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, Twinkle thought it was redirecting to the category, so (A) my apologies for not catching it, and (B) thanks for noticing and fixing it. I'll take a look to see why Twinkle zapped it, because that's weird... SchuminWeb (Talk) 03:54, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think I figured out what happened. In this revision, Twinkle saw the redirect bit at the beginning of the page, and then saw the link to the category further down. Then, seeing that the two existed on a page, it (wrongly) assumed it was a redirect and deleted it as an R1. I'll report it to Twinkle's people. SchuminWeb (Talk) 03:59, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Aha. Thanks for letting me know what went wrong. :) --Golbez (talk) 04:03, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Look at the page title, it says Rewrite. It's a subpage, and subpages are explicitly disallowed in mainspace... Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 03:00, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's not a mainspace page. It's in the project namespace, where subpages are permitted. SchuminWeb (Talk) 03:13, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Crap. I just put {{db-maintenance}} on it. It's a pain in the butt to go thru the whole MfD process when the darn thing is obviously deletion bait. Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 03:16, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I will go ahead and give you a G6 for housekeeping on it, since according to your talk page, the original author doesn't particularly care, and it's not been touched in almost a year and a half. SchuminWeb (Talk) 03:17, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. We need a search engine that can find subpages in mainspace (tho this one wasn't, I have seen others that were) by counting forward slashes. But that isn't your job. :-) later! Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 03:20, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please look at this image without Twinkle? Your deletion summary states that it was because the FU rationale was incorrect, which was not the issue; it was tagged for deletion as a Fair Use image that could be replaced with a free-use image, which it cannot. The deletion tag on it was disputed, but since I was the one that posted it, I can't undelete it in good conscience.

Thanks. EVula // talk // // 03:52, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re-looked at it, borderline enough to give it to you. SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:12, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I appreciate it. :) EVula // talk // // 13:31, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request for you to intervene

hi, you recently deleted an article under the name "DiscussMusic.net" (link to user's page) because it wasn't notable; this being the third time the user had created the article only for it to be deleted. the same user is now repeatedly adding a link to the site on the reviews section of Death Magnetic, and probably elsewhere (found at least one other article that has had a link added ("The Recession", no way of seeing how many others have had such links removed). would you be able to have a word? he's not listening to regular users like me and is getting close to throwing insults around. thanks! Onesecondglance (talk) 11:05, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I left a note to that effect on TheSkozz's talk page. SchuminWeb (Talk) 11:38, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
that's great, thanks! Onesecondglance (talk) 12:49, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy Deletion

I have a question about a recent speedy deletion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BeyondROI). CSD G11 (blatant advertising) was cited as the reason for the deletion. However, I have seen many active articles written in the same tone and with the same purpose (providing a company profile) that have not been deleted. Here is an example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RightNow_Technologies. Why is this article allowed to remain in the index while the one I submitted was pulled? I see no inherent differences in the nature/tone/intent.

Thanks for your time and response.

So is a re-write required? Little help here? thanks... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.110.9.128 (talk) 18:35, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Complete rewrite. From scratch. Have third-party references from reliable sources ready to cite. SchuminWeb (Talk) 18:43, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jackie Chan image

You deleted a picture I took personally of Jackie Chan ("Image:Jackie at CSF.jpg") ‎, when i attended an event. I used for the article "China Sourcing Fairs". Can you explain why it was not fair use? This is not a press shot by Jackie's publicists and i hold the rights to this photo. (Jkktay (talk) 01:56, 30 September 2008 (UTC))[reply]

First of all, to lay a little groundwork, Wikipedia's guidelines for fair use are far more stringent than the legal requirement for fair use. Something could reasonably be in the clear for fair use, legally speaking, while still failing Wikipedia's own guidelines for fair use content. Wikipedia wants to use as much free content as possible, and ideally, no fair use content.
Addressing the reason for the deletion, Image:Jackie at CSF.jpg is one where a free image could reasonably be created to convey the same idea. This does not mean that one has to already exist. If it is possible that a free image could be created or found, we reject the non-free content, and this is what happened here. Looking at the articles in question, there are indeed free images that convey the same general idea, and they are sufficient without the non-free images.
And lastly, you run into another issue if you created the image yourself and are uploading it to Wikipedia. Per Wikipedia:Image use policy#User-created images, "All user-created images must be licensed under a free license such as the GFDL and/or an acceptable Creative Commons license. They may also be released into the public domain, which removes all copyright and licensing restrictions." Thus you cannot upload an image to Wikipedia that you created yourself as a fair use image. If you are uploading your own work to Wikipedia, it must be placed under a free license.
Does that make sense? SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:25, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Anne Mondro for deletion

I have written an article on Anne Mondro, a contemporary artist who is also a member of SNAG. You have put this article up for deletion. I do not understand why. I have included sources and an image I obtained from the artist herself for the purpose of putting on the wikipedia page. This is an assignment for my class, I do not think I did anything wrong. Please explain. Thank you Ashlee Aeb234 (talk) 04:09, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Anne Mondro appears to fail Wikipedia's guidelines for inclusion for biographical articles, thus the nomination. Please direct any further discussion to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Anne Mondro, as any discussion here will not have any bearing on the outcome of the deletion discussion. Recreate Agility CMS

Hello. My Article on Agility CMS was recently delete under the speedy deletion rules for blatant advertising. The system is now referenced on two sites as follows: http://www.cmsmatrix.org/ (listed as Agility CMS) and http://www.cmswire.com/cms/products/ (listed under Hosted (Saas) CMS). Is this enough to make it notable? Thanks! Caspre (talk) 13:41, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No. It's just more advertising. SchuminWeb (Talk) 18:41, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion clarification

Hello again. My understanding is that an article must be notable to be valid within wikipedia. As far as I've read in the Wikipedia documentation, 'notable' means that something in the real world is legitimate, published in multiple sources and talking about by third parties, both online and offline. Agility CMS is a legitimate product and business that has multiple references from third party sources and blogs. The CMS Wire site (referenced above) is an informational site for content management professionals to learn about products - not to advertise. I'm sorry, but you're going to have to articulate how Agility CMS is less 'notable' from any of the Proprietary systems listed on the List of Content Management Systems page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_content_management_systems. If being notable is not the only requirement please explain what else is required. People are spending hours of their time putting together articles for their school, community or otherwise and it's very frustrating to have the articles yanked for no apparent reason (or when the reason is not known) Caspre (talk) 20:46, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
