University High School is a high school located in Morgantown, West Virginia that houses over 1,500 students. The school mascot is the hawk and the school colors are crimson red, old gold, and white.

History

University High School was established as University Demonstration High School in September, 1925. It was originally located in the Old Tea Room on the corner of Willey and Spruce Streets. This original school had 35 students and three teachers but quickly grew. In 1928, strained with over two hundred students, the school was relocated to the third and fourth floors of a building on the corner of Stewart Street and University Avenue. In 1930, construction on an official school building for University Demonstration High began. During the interim period, the school occupied the old library on the West Virginia University Campus until 1933 when the official school building was finished at an estimated cost of $283,837. This school was, and still is, located at the top of North Price Street. In 1972, West Virgina University turned Univrsity High School over to the Monongalia County Public School System, allowing major renovations to take place, including the addition of a gymnasium, an annex, and various refurbishments. In 1991-1992, continued renovation included adding a tower and a new cafeteria to the building. This renovation coincided with the establishment of Preston High School resulting in the transfer of over 100 Bruceton High students to University High School. In 1993, ninth graders were added to the student body, greatly increasing the student population. Several trailers have subsequently been brought to University High School to accomodate its increasing number of students.

Future

One problem with University High School today is not only that the building is 74 years old, but it was only built to house 500 students. This means that University High has 1,000 students too many in a very old building. This is why a new University High School is being built near Baker Ridge Road on the other side of Morgantown. It should be complete August 2008.
