The Lauder Light Railway was a 10.25 miles (16 km) light railway that ran from Fountainhall to Lauder via one intermediate station, Oxton.[1]

History

The 1896 Light Railways Act allowed for the construction of a speed and weight limited railway without the expense of seeking an individual Act of Parliament for each new line. The Light Railway Order for the Lauder Light Railway was made on 30 June 1898, authorising the construction the line. Work started on 3 June 1899 with the then Countess of Lauderdale cutting the first sod of earth at Lauder and the line opened on 2 July 1901.[2] Under the Grouping on 1 January 1923, the Lauder Light Railway became part of the London and North Eastern Railway.

The line was closed to passengers on 12 September 1932, and to freight on 1 October 1958 although the final train did not run along the line until a month later.[3]
