Lily Tembo

Lilly Tembo (November 20, 1981 – September 14, 2009), popularly known as Lily T, was a Zambian musician[1][2] who won International acclamation after her debut album Lily T in 2004[3], winning a Ngoma award as a best female artiste and nomination for the 2005 Koala awards.

Lily Tembo has produced two albums. She was working on her third album at the time of her death. She was also a radio presenter on 5th fm radio (Zambia).

Background

Lily Tembo was born in Kabwe, Zambia. She was brought up in a family who loved music. Her parents were vocalists who influenced her greatly from childhood. Her father played the African bongo while her mother and sisters sung in the church. She attended secondary school at Kabulonga Girls in Lusaka, Zambia. She later pursued a career in journalism at Evelyn Hone College.

Tembo emerged onto the music market in 2004 with the album Lily T which won her fame.[3] She produced her second album in 2006. Tembo was also a news reader for 5th radio, a radio station based in Lusaka Zambia.

After winning one award, she had been recognized by BBC Africa as a promising African celebrity who had remained original to traditional instruments.

Charity work

Lily had been involved in raising malaria awareness in Zambia. In April 2009, she led worshippers at a world malaria day commemoration in Lusaka.[4]

Death

After complaining over "minor stomach pains"[5] and suffering severe gastritis,[6][7] Tembo passed away around 6:30 PM, September the 14th. This came as a suprise, as she had been chatting with fans on Facebook on September 11. Tembo's sister Patience told the press "She had gastritis, she fell sick on Saturday… she was vomiting a lot and developed anaemia. Yesterday (Monday) around 19:00 hours, she died."[8]
