Solar eclipse

Actually, Shklow is some 300 km northeast of the path of totality. Still the sun would be eclipsed to a degree of a little more than 90%. It lasted from 11:27 AM to 1:59 PM local time (UTC + 3) with a maximum at 12:43. While a 90% eclipse would not be sufficient to considerably darken the day, I still can imagine that it made some impression to those who saw it in those circumstances, ordinary soldiers with little knowledge about celestial mechanics.
