He was knighted.

This President of the Orange Free State was the only one to be knighted. He was known as 'Sir John Brand' in English, therefore his title 'Sir' should be added, even though the Orange Free State was independent, albeit, under British suzerainty. - (202.68.89.4 08:14, 7 November 2006 (UTC))[reply]
