MV Aegir

In early 1977 a few enthusiasts came with the idea to bring back a Dutch radioship on the high seas about 3 years after Veronica and RNI went off the air. A lot of work went into getting money on the table for this project and with a very low budget we managed in May 1977 to buy the "Aegir." After that we worked hard to make it sea worthy and transmit ready. Unfortunately the first drawback came much too early: on Friday June 23rd 1978, people from the Dutch RCD (Radio Control Office) and police boarded the ship. The father of one of the crew members did not want to see his son going on this adventure and notified the official authorities.

For a year and a half, they managed to keep their project secret - even the free radio society insiders knew nothing about it. If everything went as planned and we would have managed to pass customs, then the first broadcast from our station, called Radio Nordzee International, would have been on air on Monday the 26th of June 1978. Because of the raid was this no longer possible; with a truck they removed all their possesions: MediumWave- and FM-transmitters, the whole studio line-up, thousands of records, record- and tapearchive, books, diagrams etc.
