Rai Teche is the company which manages the archive of all the material produced and broadcast by the Italian national public broadcaster RAI during its history.

History

During the 90s, Rai created a structure called in 1995 Teche e servizi tematici/educativi RAI (then called Rai Teche), dedicated to the cataloguing and preservation of all the material which documents the history of Italian television on over 20 different supports.[1]

Old databases were unified and the multimedial catalogue of what was broadcast on the three main channels had been put online starting by 1999, and progressively more than 300,000 hours of historical TV material, while the radio station will be online since 2000. There are also the thematic channels born on the digital terrestrial television. This catalogue is visible only inside the company and contains all the aired material, even those Rai has not rights. The high quality digitalization of the historical archive has been approved in February 2014 by the Rai's board of directors.

Rai Teche has issued a big format volume of 500 pages entitled RicordeRai, a manual to TV documentation, and a RAI ERI edition line of books about the recover of the radio broadcast  L'Approdo, the Rai phonology studio in Milan and the radio broadcast Chiamate Roma 3131, first numbers of Radiorario and an analytic book about tv quiz games. Rai Teche supplied much of its material for the exhibition 1924–2014 la Rai racconta l'Italia opened in 31 January 2014 inside the Rome's Vittoriano.[2]

In March 2014, in result of a anticipated retirement plan of Rai managers, Barbara Scaramucci left the direction of Teche, assigned ad interim to the CEO Luigi Gubitosi; in 9 July 2014, the board of directors has appointed Maria Pia Ammirati as new director of Rai Teche.

Consultation

The full catalogue can be consulted by citizens in the library located in viale Mazzini in Rome, in the Bibliomediateca Rai of the production centre in Turin, and in all the Rai's regional offices.[3] In cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, 4 terminal has been installed in the Mediateca Braidense of Milan, located inside the former church of Saint Teresa, in the Discoteca di Stato and in the library of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.[3] Since June 2018, there are also two terminals available in the Biblioteca universitaria di Pavia.

Students, researchers, teachers and everyone who needs some material for no-profit events and celebrations has to contact the customer service of Teche in Rome.[3] The material is also sold by Rai itself.

Teche's website does not show the complete catalogue of the archives but only the informations about how to consult them, as well as a series of chronologies of the TV programming and a selection of audio and video clip which recreate the history of Italian radio and TV. The website shows a complete collection of  Radiocorriere TV from 1925 to 1995 and the collection of the magazine L'Approdo letterario.

The material is aired on Rai Storia, and it is used by all thematic channels and company's websites, by Rai's generalist channels inside various transmission and for programmes based on the archives like Techetechetè (aired since 2012), as well as by the web radio Radio Techetè.
