The Sidney Hillman Foundation' has been honouring journalists, writers and public figures who pursue social justice and public policy for the common good since 1950. Sidney Hillman was the founding president of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union of America, a predecessor union of Workers United, SEIU. Sidney Hillman, an architect of the New Deal, fought to build a vibrant union movement extending beyond the shop floor to all aspects of workers’ lives.
The foundation gives out the annual Hillman Prizes and the monthly Sidney Awards.
The Hillman Prize is a journalism award given out annually by the Sidney Hillman Foundation. It gives recognition to journalists and public figures demonstrating a sense of social responsibility in their work, investigating and telling the difficult stories that need to be told. The awards go to practitioners in traditional and new media. Past winners include prominent figures in their field, as well as young journalists or publications that have yet to receive adequate recognition. Murray Kempton was the first recipient in 1950. Each winner receives $5,000. [1]

The Sidney Award is a monthly journalism award given out by the Sidney Hillman Foundation. It is given to work published in an American magazine, newspaper, on a news site or a blog, a broadcast by an American television or radio new outlet, or a published photography series. The award was launched in 2009.
Journalists can nominate their own work, or someone else's.
The Foundation announces the winner on the 10th day of each month. Recipients will be awarded $500, a bottle of union-made wine, and a certificate designed especially for the Sidney by New Yorker cartoonist, Edward Sorel.[3]
