Éljen a Magyar!

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Éljen a Magyar! is a Schnellpolka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 332). The work was performed for the first time on March 16, 1869 in the Redouten Hall in Budapest .

Remarks

This polka was composed for the Strauss Chapel's appearance at two concerts in the ballroom of the Redouten building in Budapest. The event was a national presentation of the Hungarian nation, which Strauss also paid homage to. The Hungarian name of the polka underlines this character. In the factory, Strauss processes the Rákóczi March, which is very popular in Hungary . At the two concerts in Budapest the polka was performed in a choral version. This version then gave way to a pure orchestral version that is still played today. The national-Hungarian event in Budapest has to be seen politically against the background of the Austro-Hungarian settlement that took place the year before . So this was, at least not officially, a demonstration against Austria and the imperial family, where the polka was also very well received.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 2 minutes and 50 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
