Óttarr svarti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Óttarr svarti ( Norwegian / Swedish Ottar Svarte ) was a skald in the retinue of Olav the Saint and is one of the most important sources about him. At the beginning he was a skald with the Swedish King Olof Skötkonung . When Óttarr came to Norway shortly after 1020, King Olav initially had him arrested. In his distress he composed the poem Höfuðlausn (head solution), which was so good that the king released him. In this poem Óttarr described the king's domestic and foreign undertakings. Later he composed a great song for Canute the Great .
