The Austrian Research Association , supported by the federal and state governments , was founded in 1977 with the intention of giving both science funding and science policy in Austria new impetus and thus contributing to future orientation and quality assurance of research and teaching in Austria. The Austrian Research Foundation would like to promote the discussion beyond the discipline and group interests and to include the knowledge and commitment of the university members of all federal states.

organization

The field of activity includes the treatment of fundamental questions of science policy, the initiation of interdisciplinary research activities within the framework of the company's own working groups, the allocation of funding within the framework of specialized programs (such as "International Communication", printing costs funding) as well as the awarding of outstanding scientific achievements. In addition to organizing the Austrian Science Day, the ÖFG tries to further develop important topics in the discourse for the research and science location Austria with the help of university policy workshops and colloquia and therefore regularly invites you to evidence-based educational and science policy dialogues.

At the end of June 2018, Reinhold Mitterlehner was elected President of the Austrian Research Association. In this role he succeeded Karlheinz Töchterle , who had previously headed the association for three years.

Promotion of young talent

When promoting young academics, the ÖFG is particularly concerned with supporting the talent pool in the difficult transition phase between completing a scientific education and secure employment. And this is exactly where the ÖFG funding programs come into play. By sponsoring conferences, research stays abroad or publications, the ÖFG provides a significant impetus for increased networking and international visibility of young researchers.

Working groups

By concentrating on a limited number of initiatives, the ÖFG ensures that its funds are used effectively: Currently, the ÖFG supports six working groups that research and publish inter-university and transdisciplinary research. The cross-university working groups enable the ÖFG to develop new research clusters and scientific-political issues in the discourse for Austria at an early stage and to stimulate social solutions. This expertise was contributed, for example, to the redesign of the “New Education for Teachers”, the expansion of school autonomy and the question of modern, capacity-oriented university funding.

The Scientific Advisory Board

The focus and scope of the activities of the Austrian Research Association are formulated by the Scientific Advisory Board. It includes outstanding scientists from a wide range of subjects from all Austrian university locations. The voluntary participation of the advisory board members in the conception of the priority projects of the Austrian Research Association, their expertise in the preparation of statements and suggestions and their expert work in the assessment of funding applications contribute to the quality assurance of Austrian science.
