The Austrian Society for General Medicine (ÖGAM) is an Austria- wide specialist society with the aim of anchoring general medicine in the awareness of the medical profession and the population as what it is today: a scientifically tangible, independent specialist discipline with specific diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Since it was founded in 1966 , ÖGAM has represented the specific interests of general practitioners. The main focus of work of the ÖGAM and its nine national companies are specific general medical education and training, the implementation of scientific findings in daily practice, teaching practice training, teaching, research and quality assurance in general medicine. ÖGAM is the only Austrian company to train interested doctors - including specialists - to become quality circles - moderators on behalf of the Austrian Medical Association .

In a Europe that is moving ever closer in many areas, it is necessary to actively participate in international bodies. ÖGAM is an active member of WONCA (World Organization for General and Family Medicine). Many members of the ÖGAM are active in various international general medicine working groups such as EURACT, EGPRW, EQUIP, EURIPA and EUROPREV.
