Wolfgang van den Daele

Wolfgang van den Daele (* 1939 ) is a German legal scholar and professor emeritus for political sociology at the Free University of Berlin .

life and work

Wolfgang van den Daele studied law and philosophy in Hamburg , Tübingen and Munich . He received his doctorate in law (Dr. jur.). After completing his studies, he conducted research at the Max Planck Institute for the study of living conditions in the scientific and technical world in Starnberg. In 1987 he completed his habilitation at the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University , where he was professor for science studies and sociology from 1988 to 1989 .

In 1989 he was appointed professor of sociology at the Free University of Berlin and retired in 2004. His research, teaching and publications focus on civil society processes for conflict resolution as well as bioethics and biopolitics . From 1998 to 2005 Wolfgang van den Daele was also director of the “ Civil Society and Transnational Networks ” department at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB).

From 1985 to 1987 he was a member of the German Bundestag's Enquête Commission on the opportunities and risks of genetic engineering, and from 1998 to 2000 he was a member of the ethics committee of the Federal Ministry of Health . In 2001 he was appointed to the National Ethics Council by resolution of the Federal Cabinet , of which he was a member until 2007.
