Alfred Puhler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alfred Pühler (born September 28, 1940 in Nuremberg ) is a German microbiologist , geneticist and biotechnologist . He is one of the pioneers of modern genetic engineering , biotechnology and genome research in biotechnologically relevant microorganisms and was significantly involved in deciphering the genome sequence of several microorganisms.

biography

Alfred Pühler studied physics at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg , in 1971 he did his doctorate in microbiology on the topic of the competence of donor and recipient in Rhizobium lupini conjugation and in 1977 he completed his habilitation in genetics with the habilitation thesis The behavior of the resistance factor RP 4 from Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the soil bacterium Rhizobium lupini and in the enterobacterium Escherichia coli . In 1979 Pühler was appointed to the chair of genetics at Bielefeld University, where he worked until 2008. From 1985 to 1986 he was Dean of the Faculty of Biology, from 1992 to 1994 Vice Rector for Research and Young Scientists at the University.

From 1988 to 1996 Pühler was elected expert reviewer for the field of "General Biology, Genetics and Cell Biology" of the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 1995 he was a member of the Central Commission for Biosafety (ZKBS) and from 1999 to 2005 he was elected member of the Scientific Commission of the Science Council . In 2008 Pühler was appointed Foreign Secretary of the Union of German Academies of Sciences . In 2004 he became the spokesman for the Center for Biotechnology at Bielefeld University (CeBiTec), which he had largely built up, and after his retirement he moved to CeBiTec as Senior Research Professor. He is also the coordinator of the German network for bioinformatics infrastructure - de.NBI , which is the German hub in the Europe-wide bioinformatics network ELIXIR .

research

Alfred Pühler is one of the pioneers of modern genetic engineering , biotechnology and genome research in biotechnologically relevant microorganisms, including the symbiotic nitrogen-fixing rhizobia , xanthan-forming xanthomonads and amino acid-producing corynebacteria . He was involved in deciphering the genome of various bacteria, including Sinorhizobium meliloti , Corynebacterium glutamicum and Xanthomonas campestris

Awards

Since 1993 Pühler has been a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts , since 1999 of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina , and since 2004 of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) .
