The Deutsche Akademie der Technikwissenschaften eV is a German science academy for technology and applied sciences founded in 2002 . The private and non-profit association also appears under the suitcase word acatech (from academy and technology ).

The association intends to advise politicians on technical science and technology policy issues. In addition, the association should represent the interests of the German engineering sciences at home and abroad. The academy is financed through institutional funding from the federal government and the 16 federal states as well as through donations and project-related third - party funds .

history

The idea of representing the interests of the German technical sciences in the form of a scientific academy arose at the end of the 19th century. In Germany, this idea was primarily initiated by the mechanical engineer Alois Riedler in 1899, but could not prevail. Unlike in Sweden ( Kungliga Ingenjörsvetenskapsakademien - 1919), the USA ( National Academy of Engineering - 1964), Great Britain ( Royal Academy of Engineering - 1976), Switzerland ( Swiss Academy of Technical Sciences - 1981) and other countries (see list of academic academies ) there was no higher-level representation of the interests of technical sciences in Germany until the end of the 20th century.

On November 21, 1997, the constituent meeting of the Working Group Convention for Technical Sciences took place in Berlin . This was founded on the initiative of the Berlin-Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia Academy of Sciences . The founding assembly elected Günter Spur as chairman of the board of the convention. The initially around 50 members came mainly from the fields of technical sciences or the natural, engineering and economics of the two founding academies.

The tasks that the Convention for Technical Sciences set itself included the promotion of research and the next generation of technical scientists, the intensification of international cooperation and the dialogue with the natural sciences and humanities, politics, business and society about the role of future-oriented technologies.

In order to put the convention for technical sciences on a broader basis for its further development, the presidents of the then seven German science academies decided in April 2001 to bundle all national technical science activities at academy level under the umbrella of the Union of German Academies of Science . For example, on February 15, 2002, the Convention for Technical Sciences of the Union of German Academies of Sciences was founded and an application was made for its entry in the register of associations and for non-profit status. Joachim Milberg took over the chairmanship of the board of directors , and Franz Pischinger became his deputy . In May 2003 these offices were renamed President and Vice President through an amendment to the statutes. The convention decided on the short name akatech , the spelling of which was changed to acatech shortly afterwards .

Since 2005, the association has been awarding the Punkt journalist award for outstanding reporting on science and technology .

On October 23, 2006, the federal-state commission decided to include acatech in the joint institutional funding of the federal and state governments. On April 23, 2007, the federal-state commission finally directed the recommendation to the heads of government of the federal and state governments to make “a corresponding amendment to the framework agreement for research funding”. In the justification for this decision, the BLK emphasized that the technical sciences are an important pillar in the scientific landscape and praised the acatech concept as a convincing basis for the work of an independent, national academy of technical sciences. Since January 1st, 2008 the association has been called acatech - German Academy of Science and Engineering .

Members

As with other science academies, membership is only possible through co-optation . In addition to the recommendation by a member, two reports, if possible from academy members, on the scientific achievements of the potential new member are also required. As of June 2015, the Academy has 447 members, of which 436 are ordinary and 11 are extraordinary.
