from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz F. Pischinger (born July 18, 1930 in Waidhofen an der Thaya , Austria ) is an Austrian mechanical engineer.

Life

Pischinger studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Graz , where he received his doctorate in 1954. In 1958 he completed his habilitation there in the fields of thermodynamics and internal combustion engines . From 1962, he worked for Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG for eight years , where he held a leading position in engine development.

In 1970 Pischinger was offered a position at RWTH Aachen University , where he became director of the Institute for Thermodynamics and holder of the Chair of Applied Thermodynamics. The focus of his work was the generation of exhaust gases in gasoline and diesel engines as well as the reduction of emissions.

In 1978 he founded FEV Motorentechnik GmbH , which today employs over 4500 people worldwide and develops test systems for alternative combustion processes and fuels, test bench construction, engine technology and emission concepts.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has been presenting the Franz F. Pischinger Powertrain Innovation Award, named after Pischinger, for outstanding achievements in the field of drive technology.

His son Stefan Pischinger is chairman of the management board of FEV.

honors and awards

Pischinger has received numerous prizes and awards. In 1978 he received the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1990 the DGMK awarded him the Carl Engler Medal . The Association of German Engineers awarded him the VDI Medal of Honor in 1993 and the Badge of Honor in 1997. The Technical University of Graz awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1994 . In 1996 Pischinger became a SAE Fellow Member . In 1998 he received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class . In 2000 he was awarded the Soichiro Honda Medal . Pischinger has been an honorary professor at Dalian University in China since 2005. He is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) and the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts . In 2015, Pischinger was awarded the Aachen Engineering Prize, and in 2016 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of German Research .
