Aachen engineering award

The Aachen Engineering Prize has been awarded annually by RWTH Aachen University and the City of Aachen since 2014 . The award is given to personalities who have made a significant contribution to the positive perception or further development of engineering with their life's work .

With the Aachen Engineering Prize, RWTH and the City of Aachen want to send out a signal primarily to young people. The lifetime achievement and role model function of the first prize winner is intended to demonstrate to engineering graduates in particular that ambition and esprit are required for success. Against this background, the laureate gives a speech to the graduates at the RWTH Graduate Festival.

• 2014: Berthold Leibinger - The engineer from the Swabian town of Ditzingen has made a significant contribution to establishing and further developing laser technology in Germany .

The winners are selected by an advisory board made up of personalities from science, business, politics and the press.

sculpture

The sculpture “Kreuzende Ellipsen” by the Mexican artist Mariana Castillo Deball serves as a symbolic prize . For the artwork she was inspired by the collection of mathematical models and instruments at the University of Göttingen .

Sponsors and supporters

Sparkasse Aachen is the sponsor of the prize . She wants to promote the reputation of the city and the RWTH as a talent factory for future specialists and company founders. The sculpture is donated by the Association of German Engineers, whose president Udo Ungeheuer described the RWTH as "one of the world's most renowned figureheads for German engineering education". For budding engineers it is “important and right to be aware of your own significant role in society and the increasing image of this profession. The Aachen Engineering Prize should and will also contribute to this. "
