Udo Ungeheuer (born October 23, 1950 in Bad Godesberg ) is a German manager. Between 2004 and 2013 he was CEO of Schott AG in Mainz . From 2013 to 2018 he was President of the Association of German Engineers (VDI).

biography

After graduating from high school, Ungeheuer was a reserve officer candidate with Panzerbataillon 14; he resigned as a lieutenant in the reserve. Studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University tremendously . He completed his studies in 1979 as a graduate engineer and received his doctorate in 1985 as a Dr.-Ing.

He began his professional career in 1983 at the machine tool laboratory at RWTH Aachen University, where he headed the research groups assembly and production technology as a managing senior engineer. Ungeheuer worked for BMW AG in Munich from 1986 to 1994 , most recently as head of logistics, technical planning and test vehicle construction. He then moved to the Schott board. His responsibilities extended to the Technology Development and Human Resources as well as Home Tech and Display Solutions business units. From 2004 to 2013 Ungeheuer was CEO of the specialty glass group . In addition, he was represented on the supervisory boards of several Schott subsidiaries and he was first chairman of TSV Schott Mainz , the largest mass sports club in Mainz . The President of the Bundesverband Glasindustrie eV and Chairman of the Board of the Metallurgy Association of the German Glass Industry (HVG) was a monster. The Mainz University of Applied Sciences appointed Ungeheuer as honorary professor in 2006 . He teaches there with a focus on economics.

In November 2012 Ungeheuer was elected President of the Association of German Engineers (VDI). He took up this position on January 1, 2013. He resigned as CEO of Schott AG at the end of February 2013. Ungeuer resigned as VDI President at the end of 2018 in accordance with the statutes. His successor was Volker Kefer .

Awards

For his commitment to the development of innovative products and to the Rhine-Main region and the Mainz production site, Udo Ungeheuer was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by Federal President Horst Köhler on October 4, 2005 . In addition, Ungeheuer was awarded the Borchers plaque from RWTH Aachen University and the business medal of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. In 2010 Jens Beutel awarded him the Ring of Honor of the City of Mainz . In February 2013 he received the Mérite Européen .
