The doctoral engineer or doctoral engineer (also doctor of engineering , abbreviated: Dr.-Ing. ) Is the academic degree of a doctor of engineering obtained in Germany with a doctorate .

history

The introduction of the "Doctor-Engineer" (then authentic spelling) took place on 11 October in 1899 with the diploma degree at the technical universities of Prussia to "Most High act" ( Cabinet Order ) of Wilhelm II. , King of Prussia , on the occasion of the centenary of the Technical Charlottenburg University , which was in the tradition of the Berlin Building Academy founded in 1799 . The first award was made to the chemist Ernst Kegel .

In the following years the doctoral engineer was introduced in other member states of the German Reich :

Because of the resistance of the classical universities at the time to the right to award doctorates in engineering sciences, the spelling of the degree was specified with a hyphen and in Fraktur , in contrast to the abbreviations of the other “Latin” doctoral degrees in Latin script without a hyphen. In Germany, the degree is still given in the hyphenated spelling. Before the introduction of the doctoral engineer, the technical faculties of the universities could only obtain a doctorate in philosophy (Dr. phil.). The granting of the right to award doctorates to the technical universities represented an essential step in the emancipation of the technical universities compared to the traditional universities.

In Austria-Hungary was technical colleges the exercise of Promotionsactes to the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences by decree of the Ministry of Culture and Education permits of 13 April 1901 and an associated Rigoros order issued. The short form of the degree, Dr. techn. , stands for Doctor technicae .

In the English-speaking world, the specific doctoral degree in engineering is called Doctor of Engineering ( Eng.D. , D.Eng. Or Dr.Eng. ). At many universities, however, the generic Ph.D. awarded.
