Tank battalion
A tank battalion is about 500 soldiers comprehensive, fully mobile, with main battle tanks equipped Association , whose mission in the classic combined arms combat : there is (new operation associated forces) is enemy armored forces in all types of combat operations by day and fight at night.

Originally, the tank battalions of the Bundeswehr were equipped with 54 battle tanks, three armored recovery vehicles and several other armored auxiliary vehicles.

The general basic training (AGA) took place quarterly in turn in the combat companies whose tanks were decommissioned during this period. The specialists for the staff and supply company were filtered out according to the AGA and transferred to the 1st company. With the exception of the transitioners to the headquarters and supply company, the personnel of the combat companies therefore stayed together from the first to the last day of service.
In today's basic peace operation, the Bundeswehr's tank battalion consists of a staff and supply company , three tank companies and an operational support company. When deployed, own units are often subordinated to the command of units of other branches of the armed forces. Reinforcement with Panzergrenadier , artillery , anti-aircraft or engineer forces is the rule.
The tank battalion is usually led by a staff officer with the rank of lieutenant colonel . His standing time as commander of the battalion is usually three years.
The Bundeswehr tank battalion is usually equipped with 44 Leopard 2 battle tanks . You are in the following units :
- 1. / Staff and supply company - two Leopard 2s and two Buffalo armored recovery vehicles in the repair train.
- 2. / Panzerkompanie - 14 Leopard 2 (two in the Kp command group, twelve in the three platoons , i.e. four per platoon)
- 3. / Panzerkompanie - 14 Leopard 2 (two in the Kp command group, twelve in the three platoons, i.e. four per platoon)
- 4. / Panzerkompanie - 14 Leopard 2 (two in the Kp command group, twelve in the three platoons, i.e. four per platoon)
5. / Mission support company - no armored vehicles.
Tank battalions of the Bundeswehr
The Bundeswehr currently has four active tank battalions:
- Panzerlehrbataillon 93 in Munster (subordinated to Panzerlehrbrigade 9)
- Panzerbataillon 104 in Pfreimd (subordinated to Panzer Brigade 12 )
- Panzerbataillon 203 in Augustdorf (subordinated to Panzerbrigade 21 )
- Panzerbataillon 393 in Bad Frankenhausen (subordinated to Panzergrenadierbrigade 37 , relocated from Bad Salzungen )
Following a resolution in early 2015, the following was reorganized:
- Panzerbataillon 414 in Lohheide (formerly partly active with only 2 companies, now with a Dutch company, the battalion is in turn subordinate to the Dutch 43 Gemechaniseerde Brigade , which is then subordinate to the German 1st Panzer Division )
In addition, the partially active mountain tank battalion 8 in Pfreimd with two active companies.
Following a resolution from the end of 2018, the following was reorganized:
- Panzerbataillon 363 in Hardheim (subordinated to the 10th Panzer Division). Commissioning October 2019
After implementing the location decisions of November 2, 2004, the following tank battalions existed:
- Panzer Battalion 33 in Neustadt am Rübenberge (subordinated to Panzerlehrbrigade 9 )
- Panzerlehrbataillon 93 in Munster (subordinated to Panzerlehrbrigade 9)
- Panzerbataillon 104 in Pfreimd (subordinated to Panzer Brigade 12 )
- Panzerbataillon 203 in Augustdorf (subordinated to Panzerbrigade 21 )
- Panzerbataillon 393 in Bad Salzungen (subordinated to Panzergrenadierbrigade 37 )
- Panzerbataillon 413 in Torgelow (subordinated to the Panzergrenadierbrigade 41 )
The 33rd Panzer Battalion was reclassified into a Panzergrenadier Battalion, and the 413 Panzer Battalion into a Jäger battalion.
Another five tank battalions are stored with equipment as a reserve ( supplementary troop part ).
