About this picture

Augustdorf ( Low German : Up'n Doiern ) is a municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany and belongs to the Lippe district . It is by one of the largest armed forces - army barracks in Germany as well as a military training area known.

geography

Geographical location

Augustdorf is about ten kilometers southwest of Detmold, on the edge of the Senne and at the foot of the Teutoburg Forest . The Senne community borders on the Gütersloh district in the west (urban area of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock). From Detmold, one overcomes the Teutoburg Forest via the Dörenschlucht gorge with the striking limestone quarry.

geology

Geothermal map of Augustdorf

Augustendorf lies in the Senne, the bottom of sandy meltwater deposits of Sanders of the ice sheet with residues of glacial till there. Individual dunes and dune fields were created by the wind . The other subsoil consists of solid rock. The rocks inclined to the west date from the early Middle Ages and come to the surface in the northeast. The rock deposits are clay marl , lime marl , marl lime and limestones from the Upper Cretaceous and sandstones from the Lower Cretaceous . Layers underneath are flat or folded red sandstone from the early Middle Ages and Devonian , carbon and Zechstein from ancient times .

The municipal area is largely suitable for the use of geothermal heat sources by means of geothermal probes and heat recovery through heat pump heating . Only isolated locations such as the areas in the southwest are not suitable (see the adjacent map).

Expansion and use of the municipal area

The community, classified as a “large rural community”, extends over an area of 42.18 km². The municipal area has a maximum extension in east-west direction of about ten kilometers and in north-south direction of eight kilometers.

history

1775 is Augustdorf's founding year. On December 11, 1775 signed Graf Simon of Lippe August a Meier letter of August Simon Struß legitimate, one on Dören Kolonat to put on and a pitcher. In 1779 the cultivation plan for the new settlement at Dören was decided, but the settlement was initially slow. In 1780 there were only four thatched-roof huts in the settlement. In 1789 the settlement at Dören was named "Augustdorf" - in memory of the count who died in 1782.

In 1890 the military administration of the German Reich decided on the Senne south of Augustdorf as the location of a military training area, which was put into operation in 1892 and initially covered around 50 km². Mainly unpopulated areas became restricted areas.

In the Senne

The square has been under British administration since the end of World War II. Today it is used by the British Army (Paderborn-Sennelager location) as well as by the Bundeswehr in Augustdorf and other NATO troops and is therefore one of the foreign military bases in Germany . Over the decades, Augustdorf has developed into a modern, large community, not just because of the Bundeswehr.

Due to the closure or limited use of large parts of the military area, a diverse flora and fauna that is unique in this form has been preserved there over the decades. In order to preserve this biotope , the area of the military training area should therefore be declared the Senne-Egge National Park after military use has been discontinued . A date for this has not yet been set.

On March 11, 1991, the Furlbachtal was declared a nature reserve by the Senne landscape plan, in which the municipality of Augustdorf has a large share with 84 of 205 hectares.

The tank brigade 21 "Lipperland Brigade" with around 4,500  soldiers is stationed in the GFM Rommel barracks in Augustdorf . It was subordinate to the 7th Panzer Division ( Düsseldorf ) and moved in June 2006, as part of the transformation of the Bundeswehr, to the 1st Panzer Division ( Oldenburg ).

The Heidehaus youth settlement, sponsored by the paritätischen welfare association, is located in the western municipal area in the middle of the forest and is a home facility with educational and training opportunities for young people. First, the Heidehaus was built after the war for displaced, homeless young people. In 2007 the youth settlement celebrated its 60th birthday.

Religions

Old village church

After the place was founded in 1775, the newly created settlement belonged to the Evangelical Reformed parish of Stapelage . To go to church, the settlers had to take the path to the Stapelager church. The first burials also took place in Stapelage. A first step towards having its own parish was made by donating a piece of land to the Augustdorf farmers in order to build a cemetery on this site. The funeral services still took place in the respective mourning houses at these times. In 1800 a simple half-timbered chapel was built on the site of the cemetery. This date is considered to be the founding date of the Evangelical Reformed parish of Augustdorf. After only a few decades it became necessary to replace the chapel with a new building. The current "Old Village Church" was built in 1875 by the domain building officer Merckel, who had built other churches in Schlangen, Leopoldshöhe, Bega and Almena in Lippe.

Up until the end of the Second World War, Augustdorf was a purely Protestant village of Reformed character. Initially, after the war, "ethnic German" refugees from the Baltic States and the Ukraine brought Catholic influences to Augustdorf. The newly founded Bundeswehr brought more people of other denominations to the village. People from other countries who found their work in Augustdorf and later their home, brought foreign religions to the Sennedorf. The last major influx came from the areas of the former Soviet Union , who are mostly Baptist or Mennonite . So today there are two military churches (Protestant and Catholic denominations) in addition to the Evangelical Reformed Church (old village church ). In addition to the houses of worship in the major churches, there are also houses of prayer and meeting places for Baptist, Mennonite and other free church communities, as well as a mosque for Islamic faith groups.

An indication of the current distribution of religions can be the denomination of the students in Augustdorf. According to this, in the school year 2006/2007 42.4% of the students stated Protestant, 8% Catholic and 12.1% Islamic as their religious affiliation. 33.2% said they belonged to another religion and 4.3% had no denomination.

Incorporations

Entrances (green) and exits (red) to the former community of Augustdorf. The current municipality of Augustdorf roughly corresponds to the gray and green areas. Later parts of Hörste came to Augustdorf in the north. The old territorial status corresponds to the red and gray areas. Note: The core area of Pivitsheide VL is north of Augustdorf.

In the discussion about the reorganization of the communities in North Rhine-Westphalia, there were initially considerations of incorporating Augustdorf into Lage or Detmold or uniting it with Stukenbrock. When the law on the reorganization of the municipalities was passed on November 11, 1969, it was clear: Augustdorf would remain an independent municipality. The military training area, the Teutoburg Forest and the district and confessional borders were hurdles that stood in the way of incorporation. Parts of the area of Hörste and Pivitsheide, Vogtei Lage came to Augustdorf on January 1st, 1970.

Population development

While growth to 12,000 to 15,000 inhabitants was forecast until the mid-1990s, the number of inhabitants has decreased slightly from year to year since 2002. According to the State Office for Data Processing and Statistics of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, 9721 people lived in Augustdorf on December 31, 2007. The soldiers of the GFM-Rommel-Kaserne are not included in these statistics.

politics

Augustdorf belongs to the Lippe III (99) state electoral district , in which Dennis Maelzer (SPD) was elected as a direct candidate in the 2017 state elections . At the federal level, Augustdorf belongs to the federal constituency Höxter - Lippe II (137), in which Christian Haase (CDU) was elected as a direct candidate in 2017 .

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the community of Augustdorf

With a document dated October 25, 1951, the Augustdorf community was given the right to use a coat of arms.

Blazon : Under a red shield head, in it five fan-shaped golden ears of wheat, in a golden field two downward-facing diagonally crossed plague picks with red stems, in the corners above a red five-petalled rose with golden clusters and golden leaves and below a red beehive.

The symbols used on the coat of arms indicate the history of the municipality. Only rye could be grown on the dry sandy soils of the Senne, which is symbolized by the ears of wheat. Heath plagues, which were also used as litter for the cattle stalls, served as fertilizer. The pests were knocked off with the blows. The five-petalled rose is the symbol for the land of Lippe . The beehive refers to beekeeping in the Senne in earlier centuries. The heather provided enough food and many beekeepers brought their colonies to the Senne via the Teutoburg Forest .

On March 19, 1968, the Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia awarded the municipality the control of the banner and flag.

Banner: red-gold 1: 1 striped lengthways with the municipal coat of arms above the center
Flag: red and gold 1: 1 striped lengthways with the municipal coat of arms shifted from the center to the front .

Town twinning

Since the military training area in Augustdorf was expanded in 1937, many residents of the Haustenbeck district found a new home in the Blumenberg district of Wanzleben . The aim of the partnership is to promote encounters between citizens and the groups and associations of the communities.
