The Furlbach is an orographically right tributary of the Upper Ems in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . It has a length of 14.6 km. Because of its closeness to nature, it is a reference body of water and represents the type 14 of flowing water - sand-shaped lowland streams .

River course

The Furlbach rises just below the Augustdorf area in the upper Senne within the gorges and moors nature reserve on the upper Furlbach . There is a spring moor on an area of around one and a half hectares , from which the water emerges in numerous places from the valley floor and at the valley edges. At the lower edge of the spring moor, the rivulets unite and form the Furlbach, the flow rate of which is already so high below the source area that a water mill could once be operated there. This facility, known as the Tütgenmühle , has only survived as a ruin today.

Furlbach in the Furlbachtal

The water then enters the area of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock and takes on the right side of the Furtbach flowing out of Augustdorf. It then continues on its way through the Furlbachtal in a south-westerly direction, following the flattening of the Teutoburg Forest . Within the Bachtal, the watercourse leads through exclusively wooded terrain.

A few meters after leaving the protected area of the Furlbach takes southeast of the Safari Lands Stukenbrock the from the Truppenübungsplatz Senne tapered Baerenbach and is then accumulated at the level of Fockelmühle to a fish pond. In the further course the Furlbach passes the 13.5 hectare former Sennesee sand pit , then crosses under the federal highway 33 and then enters the municipality of Hövelhof .

After crossing the Hövelriege district , the Furlbach in the Kattenheide area again runs through a dam built for the purpose of fish farming and leads south past the Rixelbruch , a 6.4 hectare nature reserve consisting of an alder forest on a sandy subsoil.

Subsequently, the Furlbach flows through the park landscape of the Koldingsheide south of Kaunitz or north of Espeln, which , like the Kattenheide, is an old border heather of the Principality of Paderborn and the County of Rietberg . To the west of this area, the water then enters the urban area of Delbrück .

North of the Delbrück district of Steinhorst , the Furlbach is diverted to the south via an old lock structure and flows into the Ems shortly afterwards. The oxbow lake , also known as the Lannertbach , continues its way in a south-westerly direction and then forms the western end of the Steinhorster basin and the Delbrück city limits towards Verl and Rietberg . South of the Steinhorster Basin, this oxbow lake then also drains into the Ems.

The water overcomes a height difference of 56 meters during its flow path, resulting in an average bed gradient of 3.8 ‰.

Characteristic

Characteristic of the Furlbach, in addition to its clear water, is the particularly bright sand bed with a distinctive corrugated structure, which is particularly pronounced in the Furlbachtal, but is widely recognizable throughout the course of the water. While the stream in its upper reaches meandering has cut in a canyon contains, the bed in the lower reaches extending approximately from the entrance into the Kolding Heide as a result of sedimentation is higher than the surrounding Auenniveau.

etymology

The name "Furlbach" refers to the pine or the pine, which used to be called Forle or Furle. The pine is by far the most common tree species in the forests of the Senne.

The Furlbach is popularly known as "witte Biäke" (white brook) because of its very light sand bed.

Others

Above all in the middle and lower reaches of the Furlbach there are weir systems , which were formerly used to irrigate the adjacent meadows and which were an insurmountable obstacle for the aquatic fauna. In recent years, however, the ecological continuity has been restored by creating bypass channels at three weir systems and redesigning six weirs to become Sohlgleiten .
