With the exception of the 2016/17 and 2018/19 seasons, the AWBL has been played together with Slovak women's teams as the Austrian Slovak Women Basketball League ((sic!), Short: ASWBL) since 2014 . After determining a winning team in the ASWBL, the teams play a national champion separately according to their national origin. At the moment (as of 2019) there are twenty game days in the regular season and the four best-placed teams play a postseason according to the best of three game mode.

- 2005/06 season
Preliminary round: In the AWBL in 2005/06 ten clubs initially compete in two pools. Pool A consists of four teams (including a non-competitive foreign team), Pool B of six teams.
Main round 1: The teams in Pool A play twelve rounds or four rounds (up to December 21, 2005) in the basic round, those in Pool B ten rounds (up to December 18, 2005). The two first placed teams from pool B reach main round 1 (AH1) with the three Austrian teams from pool A. Bonus points are awarded as follows for AH1: 3 - 2 - 1 for the teams from pool A, 1 for the winner from pool B. The four participants in the play-off will be determined in ten rounds or eight games per team (13 January to 19 March 2006). The semi-finals (March 31 to April 16, 2006 at the most) and the series of finals (from April 23, 2006) will each be played as the “best of five”. The upcoming master will be determined by May 7, 2006 at the latest. The losers in the semi-finals play best-of-three for third place in the AWBL.
Main round 2: The four teams that did not qualify for AH1 determine - taking the results against each other from the basic round - in main round 2 (AH2) in twelve rounds or four rounds (13 January to 9 April 2006 ) the final placements six to nine. The last one after the AH2 is relegated from the AWBL. However, the club has the right to participate in the promotion games (if they become necessary).
Other basketball leagues
Below the ÖBV-Bundesliga there is initially the 2nd Bundesliga, including the national leagues in the nine federal states, with their own basketball associations.
