Vienna Danube City Timberwolves is an Austrian basketball club from Vienna . The men's team will compete in the Bundesliga (ABL) from the 2018/19 season . The women's team will also compete in the top division of the Austrian Women Basketball League (AWBL) from the 2018/19 season .

history

The club was founded on June 21, 1972 under the name WAT Donaustadt through a spin-off of the basketball section of WAT Stadlau. In addition to basketball, the new club also offered children's gymnastics and gymnastics, and Ferdinand Stadelmayer was the first chairman after it was founded and later became honorary president. In the meantime there was also a tennis division, which was built up in the 1980s, but was closed again after a few years.

Under the leadership of Werner Racz (President until April 2006) and Walter Aigner (President from April 2006), young talent has been strongly encouraged since the mid-1990s. In June 2009 Wolfgang Horak took over the office of President from Aigner. The promotion of youth work was continued under his leadership. In the 2009/10 season, the men's team of Vienna won the championship title in the 2nd Bundesliga, the successful team was coached by Robert Langer . The association developed into one of the leaders in terms of youth work nationwide.

In May 2012, a collaboration was agreed with the basketball department of the major German club FC Bayern Munich , and in August 2012, together with FK Austria Wien , Vienna Vikings and Volleyball NÖ Sokol Post, the interdisciplinary First Vienna Ball Sports Academy (EWBA) was founded. In September of the same year, the “Wolves Dome” hall in Bernoullistraße was opened.

In 2013, young player Jakob Pöltl left  the club to join Bundesliga club Arkadia Traiskirchen before moving to the United States a year later , where he was to  cause a sensation at the University of Utah . In June 2016, Pöltl was the first Austrian to be selected in the NBA draft (ninth by the Toronto Raptors ).

In 2015 the championship title in the 2nd Bundesliga was won for the second time, the coach was Hubert Schmidt . In the summer of 2016, three full-time coaches were hired, which was described as a "milestone in the club's history". In the 2017/18 season, winning the championship was repeated. Again Schmidt was responsible for leading the way to the title. In the summer of 2018, President Wolfgang Horak, one of the defining club figures of the previous decade, withdrew from operational business. In June 2018, the Timberwolves were granted the license for the Bundesliga, subject to conditions, so that the promotion could be completed.

In the run-up to the 2019/20 season, the team was initially not granted the license for the highest league in the country, but was ultimately issued in the course of summer 2019 despite financial restrictions.
