Antonio Guedes Muniz (born June 12, 1900 in Maceió , † June 28, 1985 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian engineer and aviation pioneer in the Brazilian aviation industry.

Life

The Muniz M-7 his first development that was built in large numbers

Muniz originally wanted to become a priest, which is why he first attended a seminary, but made a decision and moved to the Anglo-Brazilian college in Rio de Janeiro . After college, from 1918 he attended the polytechnic school of Rio de Janeiro, which he finished in January 1921 as an engineering candidate. He joined the army and did his service with the Companhia de Aviação da Arma de Engenharia , whose main task was to maintain the army aviation and later air force base Campo dos Afonsos . He actually had no interest in aviation, which changed when he was invited on a sightseeing flight by aircraft captain Marcos Evangelista da Costa Villela Junior in 1921 .

On January 13, 1923, he married Lucia da Rocha e Silva. In the same year he organized the military meteorological service and became its first head.

In August 1925 he was sent to France to study aeronautical engineering at the Ecole Supérieure de Aéronautique . During this time he developed several aircraft, which he designated as the M-1, M-2, M-3, M-4 and M-5. Only the Muniz M-5 was built by Caudron in 1929 with funds from the Brazilian government and, after successful test flights in France, was brought to Brazil. After his return to Brazil he became director of the técnicos da aviação militar and developed other aircraft, several of which were built and successful. During the 1st National Aviation Congress in 1934, Muniz suggested producing aircraft in their own country instead of just importing them. Finally, the Companhia Nacional de Navegação Aérea (CNNA) was founded, which produced several Muniz designs. Later, after leaving the military, he founded the company Cassio Muniz sa in São Paulo .

In 1934 he published the book A construção de aviões and in 1958 Um mundo mais humano .
