The city of Maceió , officially Município de Maceió , is the capital of the Brazilian state of Alagoas . It is located on the Atlantic coast and in July 2019 had an estimated 1,018,948 inhabitants on an area of ​​510 km². It has been the capital of the Maceió metropolitan area since 1998 .

history

Sugar cane plantations have existed on the territory of today's Maceió since the 17th century . In 1815 the settlement of Maceió received city status and in 1839 it was made the capital of Alagoas.

Because of the beaches and the hinterland with coconut and mango gardens , Maceió is very popular with tourists today. The media museum Museu da Imagem e Som de Alagoas is located in the Jaraguá district above the historic quarter at the fishing port .
