Girau do Ponciano , officially Município de Girau do Ponciano , is a medium- sized town in the state of Alagoas in the underdeveloped northeast ( Região Nordeste ) of Brazil .
The municipality has an area of around 514 km² (as of 2018) and 36,600 inhabitants at the 2010 census. These are called Girauens . As of July 1, 2019, population was estimated at 40,917 inhabitants. The distance to the capital Maceió is 159 km.
Until 1943 the place was called Vila de Belo Horizonte . The Munizip was founded on July 15, 1958, but the emancipation did not take effect until January 1, 1959 after the spin-off from Traipu . After the municipal elections in 2016, David Ramos de Barros of the Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro (PTB) is the city prefect .
