The Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro ( PTB ) is a party in Brazil with headquarters in Brasília .

history

The Brazilian Workers' Party was founded on May 15, 1945 by supporters of the then Brazilian President Getúlio Vargas after the end of his dictatorship was imminent. The party, founded primarily to stem the growth of the Communist Party and to support Vargas, who was re-elected president in 1950, grew rapidly. The PTB received support from the trade unions. Between 1945 and 1962 the PTB became the third strongest force in the country, after the social democratic PSD (Partido Social Democrático) and the National Democratic Union (União Democrática Nacional - UDN). In the 1962 congressional elections, it was even able to outstrip the UDN, the second strongest force.

After Vargas' death in 1954, João Goulart became the central figure of the party. When Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira was elected president in 1955, Goulart became vice-president. This coalition was confirmed in 1960. In 1961, after the resignation of the new President Jânio Quadros , Goulart even became President and the PTB had reached the height of its power. In 1964 the military supported the Goulart government with a coup d'état, banned the PTB and prohibited important members of the party from exercising political mandates. The resulting military dictatorship lasted until 1985

The party was founded again on November 3, 1981 by Ivete Vargas , niece of President Getúlio Vargas , and is more liberal than the previous party. Ivete Vargas became the first chair. Roberto Jefferson is currently the party chairman. Jefferson was in Mensalão scandal because of money laundering convicted and passive bribery.
