FERRMED

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

FERRMED is an association of European commercial enterprises and institutions that tries as a lobby to promote rail freight traffic between Scandinavia and the western Mediterranean countries. One of the main goals is to simplify and accelerate cross-border traffic in Europe by defining uniform standards. The largest economic metropolises are to be spatially connected to the seaports and airports as well as their hinterland. FERRMED was founded on August 5, 2004 in Brussels as a non-profit organization and currently has 143 members.

FERRMED standards

The following goals are being pursued in order to make rail freight traffic on the European main routes more efficient:

  • The main lines should be standard-gauge , double-track and electrified (with 25 KV if possible ) and be designed for an axle load of 22.5 to 25 tons.
  • They are the UIC - gauge correspond and a maximum pitch having from 12 parts per thousand.
  • ERTMS is the preferred signaling system .
  • The equipping of the lines and the passing tracks should enable train lengths of 1,500 m.
  • The target is 3,600 to 5,000 tons of train weight.

FERRMED axis

The "Big FERRMED Axis" runs from Stockholm via Copenhagen ( Fehmarnsund Bridge ) Hamburg , Duisburg , Koblenz (from here branching off the western main line), Luxembourg , Metz , Lyon , ( Marseille ), Barcelona , along the western Mediterranean coast to Algeciras . In Koblenz, the eastern main route branches off via the Rhine Valley Railway and the Lötschberg Tunnel to Milan and on to Genoa . From the junctions of the two main branches there are numerous connecting routes to other important centers (e.g. in Russia, Norway, Great Britain, Portugal and Morocco).

Members

The members of FERRMED are predominantly the potential users such as seaports and freight forwarders . Chambers of commerce from France and Spain and the rail vehicle industry represent another large proportion . In contrast, railway companies are hardly represented.
