Algeciras [ alxeˈθiɾas ] is a port city in the south of the Spanish province of Cádiz ( Autonomous Region of Andalusia ). Its population was 121,957 on January 1, 2019, according to information from the INE . The place is near the British possession of Gibraltar . Algeciras is just a little further north than the southernmost European city of Tarifa . Both cities are on the Strait of Gibraltar . Algeciras lies on the Mediterranean Sea , to the east lies the Bay of Algeciras .
The name Algeciras comes from the Arabic place name al-Dschasira al-Chadra (الجزيرة الخضراء) for green island (or peninsula ) for all of Spain. The small island of Isla Verde, south of Algeciras, has retained this name in full .
history
In this city the Moors first gained a firm foothold when they invaded Spain in 711 and held the city until it was conquered by Alfonso XI. of Castile on March 27, 1344.
The naval battle of July 6, 1801 and the naval battle of July 12, 1801 also took place in front of Algeciras . In the first the French triumphed over the English, while in the second the combined Franco-Spanish fleet was defeated by the English.
In 1906, a conference of the great powers to solve the First Morocco Crisis took place in Algeciras .
Operation Algeciras was a failed plan by the Argentine military to use Montoneros to sabotage the British military facilities in Gibraltar during the Falklands War .
economy
port
The port of Algeciras had in 2015 a turnover of 98.5 million tons of goods (+ 3.7% on 2014). The container throughput stood at just over 4.5 million TEU , in RoRo -Transport 285,000 were trucks / trailer handled. There is also an annual volume of approximately 4.8 million passengers and 1.3 million motor vehicles. Most of the shipping traffic is handled with Africa , the port also serves as an interface between Africa and Europe.
The port is being expanded on the outer Isla Verde, with 790 meters of quays being built on an area of 37 hectares .
To compete with the Algeciras container terminal, the new port Tanger-Med between Tangier and Ceuta on the Moroccan side opposite the Mediterranean opened in 2007 and is to be expanded to become the largest deep-water port in Africa.
There is permanent ferry traffic with the port of Tanger-Med , as well as with the Spanish enclave of Ceuta by the Spanish ferry company Balearia . Due to the daily traffic of people and goods, the city has numerous hotels and other accommodations.
The regional oil refinery that supplies the tankers in the Algeciras Bay is important. In the waters of Gibraltar, better prices can then be obtained because of the lower taxes.
