Barbate is a city on the Costa de la Luz in southern Spain . Barbate is located about 66 km southeast of Cádiz and 20 km northwest of Tarifa on the Atlantic coast near the Strait of Gibraltar . Cities and villages in the immediate vicinity are Vejer de la Frontera , Zahara de los Atunes and Los Caños de Meca . Cape Trafalgar is also about 10 km to the northwest .
The former name Barbate de Franco , after the Spanish dictator and general Francisco Franco (1892–1975), is rarely used anymore. On March 7, 1998 the nickname was abolished.
economy
For a long time the main economic factor was tuna fishing. Barbate has traditionally been one of the centers of traditional tuna fishing with gillnets ( almadraba ) anchored on the seabed . The decline in fishing has increased unemployment, which means that young people in particular see drug smuggling (especially hashish ) from Morocco as a source of income.
Tourism plays only a minor role, it is mostly the Spaniards themselves who travel to Barbate. In the high season months of July and August, Barbate still resembles a typical Spanish seaside resort. The water quality is impaired by the sewage from the Río Barbate .
Climate, nature and landscape
The climate is typically maritime and Mediterranean due to the Atlantic. Even in winter, daytime temperatures hardly drop below 15 ° C and the values in August hardly exceed 32 ° C.
Special features of the landscape lie especially in the area around Barbate: rocky bays and extensive sandy beaches surrounded by extensive pine forests in the northwest (La Breña) and the marshland (Marismas) in the southeast, which are under nature protection.
To the west, Cape Trafalgar (Cabo T.) protrudes into the Atlantic.
