history

The place was already settled in Phoenician , Punic and Roman times, but the actual foundation took place in 1303 on the royal order of Ferdinand IV : Alonso Pérez de Guzmán el Bueno (the good) receives the area for settlement as a fief. The old town, as it is preserved to this day, was built in the 18th century. Until the 19th century, the dukes of Medina Sidonia (as successors to Guzmán del Bueno) remained feudal lords of the village, which is mainly characterized by fishing and wine-growing. In 1876 Alfonso XII gave the place. granted city rights. At the end of the 20th century, tourist development began on the municipality's own beaches, which is why the city now has the largest contingent of hotel beds in the province of Cadiz .

With increasing prosperity, the population of Chiclana also grew in the 1980s and 1990s. Illegally constructed real estate has become a major problem in this regard. In the suburbs of Chiclana in particular, thousands of single and multi-family houses have been built within a few years that did not have a building permit. Since politicians are aware of the lack of control, in January 2014 they offered around 13,000 homeowners retrospective permits and an amnesty.

In 2015 Chiclana is the European sports city with 420 events across all sports.

Attractions

Historic town center, monastery and church of Jesus Nazareno (1667–1674), parish church of San Juan Bautista (1773–1814) with clock tower, pilgrimage church of Santa Ana (2nd half of the 18th century), doll museum, bullfighting museum, wineries (sherry), spa Fuente Amarga, Sancti Petri (former fishing village for tuna).

The beach “Sancti Petri” with its marina and the eight kilometer long beach “Playa de La Barrosa” are located about seven kilometers from the city center. The Castillo de Sancti Petri is located on an offshore island. This island is known for its connection to the ancient hero Heracles , who is said to have spent two of his heroic deeds near him.

Chiclana is the end of the "Ruta del vino", the wine route that connects all cities in the sherry growing area.

tourism

Coast in Novo Sancti Petri

In the past ten years, Chiclana and especially the towns of Playa Barrosa and Novo Sancti Petri have developed into tourist centers. The numerous golf courses make the place attractive for those interested. Most hotels are closed during the winter months. The season starts regularly on Easter week. Then all 27 large hotels will open only a few days later. Chiclana is also known for its many small bodegas, which show how the typical Chiclana wine is made.

Novo Sancti Petri

The tourist complex Novo Sancti Petri is located in the south of the coast and includes a number of 4 and 5 star hotels, golf courses, housing developments and shopping centers. The place is mainly characterized by golf. In 1990 the first golf course with 27 holes was built. Today Novo Sancti Petri has a number of golf courses:

  • Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club (36 holes)
  • Campano Golf Club (9 holes)

beaches

Playa de la Barrosa

The beach is 8 km long and stretches from the slope that separates it from Sancti Petri beach to Loma del Puerco. The beach holds various quality seals for dealing with nature - including the Bandara Azul, which has been awarded annually since 2010 for keeping the beach clean.

Due to the extension of the beach, three sections can be distinguished, namely "Primera, Segunda y Tercera Pista". The first section is characterized by a long coastal promenade with shops, restaurants, relaxation areas and gardens. There are housing estates along the second section. The third connects to the beach of Novo Sancti Petri, where most of the hotels are located.

Sancti Petri Beach

The coastal zone preserves its dunes and natural vegetation. Thus, in addition to the beach itself, various forms of landscape have been preserved.

Sancti Petri Beach

This beach is known for its naturalness and is located within a park in front of the Sancti Petri Castle. It has also been awarded various environmental seals such as the Bandera Azul, Ecoplayas or Q for quality in tourism.
