Paterna de Rivera is a Spanish municipality in the province of Cádiz in the autonomous region of Andalusia . The inhabitants call themselves Paterneras or Paterneros .

Geographical location

The place is about 45 km east of Cádiz inland in a hilly landscape, which is characterized by agriculture.

economy

In the area around the village there is intensive farming and animal husbandry. Patenera de Rivera is known for raising fighting bulls and Arabian horses .

Thanks to its medicinal springs , the place benefits from spa tourism.

history

Various villages have settled in the area since the Neolithic Age . In Roman times , the nearby town of Gigonza was famous for its medicinal baths. Mosaics, tombs and coins from Gades, the Roman Cádiz, bear witness to the presence of Roman families. After the Romans, the Visigoths ruled the area. The Muslims also used the springs in the era of Al-Andalus and called the place the Valley of the Baths.

After the Reconquista , the Christian reconquest, the area came into the possession of the Enríquez de Ribera, lords of Alcalá de los Gazules . In 1444, Per Afán de Ribeira built an estate. In 1503 Francisco Enríquez de Ribera founded the place and set up a city council.

In 1825, the local administration broke away from its dependence on Alcalá de los Gazules. With the beginning of spa tourism in the 19th century and the establishment of a cattle fair, the population opened up additional sources of income.

One theory is that the petenera , a palo of flamenco , was created in the 19th century by a local singer called La Paternera or La Petenera .
