Puerto Real ( province of Cádiz ) is a city in Andalusia ( Spain ), which is located in the southeast of the Bay of Cádiz . history
The excavations of El Retamar suggest a prehistoric settlement from the Neolithic Age and those of Puente Melchor , El Gallinero and Villanueva are assigned to the Romanization. There are only a few references from Muslim times and it was not until the end of the 15th century , when the Bay of Cádiz was settled by Christians again after the Reconquista , that the real story of Puerto Real begins: The place was founded on June 18, 1483 by order of the Catholics Kings founded. It was laid out as a "royal port ", as the name suggests, because the Spanish crown needed an expanded access to the sea.
The chessboard-like cityscape that is still so visible today was laid out in the 16th century. In 1676 the city became independent from the crown and an economic boom began that lasted until the end of the 18th century. Signs of this are still visible in the cityscape today: many houses are adorned with baroque portals. In the 20th century a shipyard was built on the outskirts of the city . The modern new building of the natural science faculty of the University of Cádiz is also on the outskirts.
