Setenil de las Bodegas is a small village and a municipality between Ronda and Olvera in the province of Cádiz in Andalusia ( southern Spain ), located on the Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos ( Road of the White Villages ).

Setenil de las Bodegas

The name of the village is of Latin origin and means seven times nothing (Latin septem nihil ). This comes from the time of the conquest of Moorish Spain by the Catholic Kings . The area around Setenil was a border area between Moors and Christians for about 200 years , and only after the seventh attempt did the village fall into Christian hands in 1485 .

Especially in the town center you will find a large number of houses built into the steep cliffs that were once hollowed out by the River Guadalporcún . The overhanging rocks often serve as house roofs, making the village semi-underground.

Setenil's sights include an old Moorish castle ruin , a Gothic parish church ( 15th century ) and the town hall ( 16th century ).

The area around Setenil is dominated by agriculture, mainly you will find endless olive groves . Until the middle of the 20th century there was also an olive oil factory ( Santa Lucía - Fábrica de Aceite ) on the outskirts, which is located on the road to the neighboring town of Torre Alháquime and the Río Guadalporcún. This is still inhabited today, but is no longer managed.
