La Línea de la Concepción is a Spanish city in the province of Cádiz in the south of the autonomous region of Andalusia . It is 5 m above sea level on the northern border of the Gibraltar peninsula . It is 134 km to the provincial capital Cadiz .
history
From 1730, the border with Gibraltar was fortified by bulwarks to curb the expansion of the British overseas territory. Little by little, traders settled in, so that a hamlet was formed that was initially dependent on the municipality of San Roque . In 1810 the fortifications built by Philip V were destroyed by the English in connection with the Spanish War of Independence . On January 17, 1870, the place of San Roque became independent. The now independent municipality had only 300 inhabitants and was called La Línea de Gibraltar. From 1883 the name La Línea de la Concepción appears in the files and in 1913 the place was given this name by King Alfonso XIII. granted city rights.
Due to its geographical proximity to Morocco, La Línea is now one of the main gateways for hashish smuggling into the European Union. Police estimate that up to ten speedboats bring drugs ashore here every night, for which around 30 clan- like gangs with up to 100 members each are supposed to be active on site.
