Grazalema is a place in the northeast of the province of Cádiz ( Andalusia / Spain ) at the foot of the mountains of the Sierra del Pinar.

Traditionally, agriculture ( sheep breeding , cork oaks among others) and handicrafts ( weaving , carpentry among others) were the livelihoods of the Grazalemeños, as the residents are called. Today, the agricultural areas are partially severely limited, as the place is in the middle of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park . The surrounding sierras ( Spanish : mountain ranges ) are popular destinations for hikers and climbers , the Peñón Grande is particularly interesting for the latter . For many residents, tourism became an essential source of income.

Grazalema's origins go back to a Roman settlement. During the centuries of Moorish rule on the Iberian Peninsula , the place was further expanded. It was not until 1485, only seven years before the final end of the Moorish Al-Andalus , that it was conquered by the Catholic Spaniards during the Reconquista . In the 17th century the baroque church Iglesia Parroquial was built.

Grazalema is one of the white villages ” of Andalusia; a series of villages and small towns which, mostly going back to Phoenician and Roman settlements, were expanded by the Moors. Typical for this are the white-painted houses and narrow, winding streets, as can also be found in North Africa .

A remarkable peculiarity is the climate of the place. Grazalema has the highest annual rainfall in Spain with 2132 l / m² and even neighboring towns a few kilometers away only reach a quarter of this amount.
