history

1835

The addition of the name de la Frontera ("on the border") after many places indicates the region around Jerez as a long-fought area between Moors and Christians . After the collapse of the Almoravid rule in Al-Andalus , Jerez was briefly an independent Taifa emirate when, in 1145, three different usurpers rose to be emirs there in quick succession: first the Idriside Abu'l-Qaim Ahyal, then the Galbunide Abu 'l-Gammar, and finally the Maimunide' Ali. But by the end of the year the Almohads had already ended this interlude and incorporated Jerez into their empire. It stayed that way until the Reconquista . In 1248 Jerez came into the possession of Castile . At the beginning of the 2010s, Jerez de la Frontera was the city with the highest mountain of debt in Spain (almost one billion euros). Municipal employees received no wages for months, demonstrated in front of the town hall and went on strike, and the mayor received death threats.

tourism

Jerez is the hometown of the famous sherry , which is called Jerez in Spanish (vino) . The word sherry, which is common in other languages, comes from the old pronunciation of the name of the city Xerez (pronounced: Scherez), which was derived from the Arabic name of the city, Sherish . When the English got to know the liqueur wine from Jerez, the old sound level was still preserved from which they derived the word “sherry”, which has been preserved to this day.

From 1986 to 1990, 1994 and 1997 Formula 1 races were held on the Circuito de Jerez ; today the course is a very popular test track. Until 2015, the Formula 1 tests for the new season took place here regularly. The Spanish Grand Prix of the Motorcycle World Championship , which takes place annually on the slopes, regularly attracts more than 200,000 spectators.

The world-famous Royal Andalusian Riding School is located in Jerez .

The renowned Flamenco Festival ( Festival de Jerez ) takes place annually at the end of February / beginning of March . A rider and horse festival ( Feria del caballo ) follows in mid-May . In September there is a festival, the autumn festivals ( Fiestas de otoño ).

One of the most famous sights is the Alcázar fortress.

Infrastructure

Jerez has an international airport (XRY) (La Parra). It is located around eight kilometers as the crow flies northeast of the city center.
