José Gallegos y Arnosa
José Gallegos y Arnosa (born May 3, 1859 in Jerez de la Frontera , † September 20, 1917 in Anzio near Rome ) was a Spanish genre painter , sculptor and architect .
Gallegos made extensive study trips to Italy , Spain and Morocco , where he liked to paint colorful folk and street scenes. From 1881 he stayed in Rome for a long time . In his later days he painted genre pictures that mainly show holy masses and processions in Spain and Italy. The colors and light representations of his works were influenced by French impressionism .
His most important sculptural and architectural work includes the magnificent marble canopy for the high altar of the Santiago Church in his hometown of Jerez de la Frontera , which he made from 1900 to 1906. This contains 64 bronze statues of saints that were influenced by Roman sculpture .
