history

In Roman times , the place with the Latin name Antium was a popular seaside resort, in which noble Romans owned a villa . Excavations there brought to light valuable art objects and prove the high cultural level of the ruling class.

Antium was, until its conquest by the Romans in 468 BC. BC, the capital of the Volscians . According to legend, the patrician Coriolanus was executed in Antium; Shakespeare also has some scenes from his tragedy Coriolan played here. Coriolanus took over the Volscian power here. After the last unsuccessful uprising (338 BC) the city was razed. The keel spurs of the Antium ships adorned the stands of the Roman Forum . During the Confederate War, Antium was on Sulla's side and was defeated by Marius's troops around 87 BC. Looted BC.

Later, towards the end of the Roman Republic , Antium became a seaside resort for the Roman patricians. The place was only a day's journey from Rome, far enough to get away from the turmoil and unrest in Rome, close enough to be back in Rome quickly if necessary. When Cicero returned from exile, he collected the devastated remains of his libraries in the hope that his scrolls would be safe there. Mighty Romans built villas by the sea in Antium. Maecenas owned a villa in Antium. Of these villas, that of Nero was the most famous. He had the old villa, in which Augustus had been appointed pater patriae by a Roman delegation , demolished and a larger one built in the same place. His villa was used by all his successors up to the Severers . The ruins can be seen today on Anzio beach.

The city fell into disrepair in the Middle Ages. In 1378 a sea battle took place near Anzio, in which the Venetian admiral Vettor Pisani defeated the Genoese fleet.

On January 22, 1944, American and British forces landed behind the German lines in central Italy as part of Operation Shingle at Anzio and east at Nettuno; the battle for the bridgehead, which was sealed off by German troops, lasted around four months (the Allies broke out on May 23, 1944).
