Formello is an Italian commune in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Lazio region with 13,505 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 28 kilometers north of Rome .

geography

Formello lies between the Monti Sabatini and the valley of the Tiber . The municipality belongs to the Parco Regionale Veio .

history

The Formellos area belonged to the former territory of the Etruscan Veia (Latin Veii ) and shared its fate with the submission to the dominance of Rome in 396 BC. The Bucchero amphora from Formello with an early Etruscan alphabet comes from earlier times . After the Migration Period, the fundus formellum and the surrounding area were incorporated into the domusculta Capracorum by Pope Hadrian I (772-795) , a large estate that had to supply Rome with agricultural products, but which soon fell victim to the raids of the Arabs . Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085) subordinated the new settlement to the Abbey of San Paolo fuori le Mura in Rome, which it gave to the Orsini family in 1279 ; In 1544 Girolamo Orsini issued a statute for the municipality. Like Campagnano di Roma , Sacrofano and Cesano, which is now part of Rome, it later became part of the Orsini Duchy of Bracciano and, like the other three towns, came to the Princes Chigi in 1661 . A fresco in the Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia from around 1660 shows an old depiction of formulaless.

Attractions

  • Palazzo Orsini-Chigi: Following a gate with the Chigi coat of arms, the palace occupies the north side of Piazza San Lorenzo. Originally built as a defense structure, it was redesigned in the Renaissance style during the Orsini period and the inner courtyard was partially equipped with arcades and a loggia above. After decades of neglect, a renovation was recently carried out up to around 2013, which also includes a duplicate metal top of the former defensive tower integrated into the building. Nowadays, the Museo dell'Agro Veientano and accommodation for pilgrims are housed in the palace, and special exhibitions are held in the Sala Orsini.
  • Parish Church of San Lorenzo: Because of the later addition of its high bell tower with its elegant onion dome, the church is built directly onto the palace and only has a fragmentary facade with a portal with a gable. The three-aisled interior is a splendid example of late Renaissance church architecture, which dates back to a redesign since 1574. On tufa pillars and the upper aisle with windows follows a painted wooden ceiling in the central nave with large coffers, which mainly contain roses that belong to the Orsini coat of arms. The side altars, also designed in the Renaissance style, contain frescoes by the local painter Donato Palmieri, a student of Giorgio Vasari . A recently restored meridian from 1796 in the floor indicates the midday sun position for Formello.
  • Church of San Michele Arcangelo: Standing in the south of the city center, the building, which was first mentioned in 1236, has a simple facade with a Renaissance portal to which the bell tower is built on the left. In the single-nave interior, a stone wall container for hosts and oil is particularly important, which is completely decorated in the purest Renaissance style with floral and architectural ornamentation.
  • Palazzo Comunale: The only two-story town hall with at least six entrances connects to the church and continues in a baroque chapel with a curious miniature bell tower.
  • Villa Chigi-Versaglia: South of the town center on Via della Villa 98 is the ruin of a country house that was built between 1666 and 1674 by the architect Carlo Fontana for Cardinal Flavio Chigi , the nephew of Pope Alexander VII (1655–1667) . From the largely ruinous complex, a high tower has been preserved directly on the modern street, which served as a belvedere; in addition there are the remains of the main building and a chapel.
  • Tomba Campana , Etruscan tomb from around 600 BC Chr.
  • In the municipality of Formello, the Cremera stream flows in the Sorbo Valley and later flows into the Tiber . By damming at an earlier mill, it forms a small lake and a waterfall. At this brook in the year 477 BC BC a rather legendary battle between troops from the cities of Rome and Veii took place, in which the Romans under the leadership of the Fabii family suffered a definite defeat: It went down in history as the "Battle of the Cremera Brook".
