geography

Vicovaro lies on the edge of the Monti Lucretili in the valley of the Aniene . It is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle dell'Aniene .

history

The place was an outpost of the Aequer , which came early under the rule of the Romans. It was on the Via Varia, from which it takes its name, Vicus Variae (village on the Varia). Around 500 the monastery of SS. Cosma e Damiano (today San Cosimato) was founded, in which St. Benedict was abbot for a time before he founded his own monastery in Subiaco . In the 12th century Vicovaro came to the Orsini family . They sold it to the Bolognetti in 1672. A century later it came to the Cenci .

Attractions

Vicovaro, San Giacomo
  • Two kilometers from the village is the San Cosimato Monastery, which dates back to the 5th century.
  • From 1693, Sebastiano Cipriano converted the Orsini's medieval castle into the Palazzo Cenci-Bolognetti.
  • The parish church of San Pietro was built from 1743 by Girolamo Theodoli on behalf of Cardinal Mario Bolognetti.
  • The octagonal chapel of San Giacomo Maggiore, built between 1454 and 1465 by Domenico di Capodistria and Giovanni Dalmata , shows a peculiar mixture of Gothic and Renaissance style elements. The portal with its rich figural decorations is particularly remarkable. It depicts saints, but also members of the Orsini family.
  • A medieval quarter around the former church of San Sabino is particularly well preserved.

Culinary specialties

In September the Sagra della Pagnotta Vicovarese, festival of bread, takes place.
