Fiumicino is an Italian commune with 81,718 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Lazio region .
Fiumicino is known worldwide for the Rome-Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci international airport, which is located in the municipality .
geography
Fiumicino is located 28 km southwest of Rome on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea . The municipal area includes the Tiber delta , the coastal plain to the north, and extends into the hill country south of Lake Bracciano . The actual village of Fiumicino is north of the mouth of the Fiumicino Canal and still has the atmosphere of a fishing village. While the Isola Sacra in particular, between the canal and the estuary of the Tiber, and the area around the airport have been heavily sprawled over the past few decades, the northern municipal area with the Litorale Romano Nature Park is largely natural. The core area is the 280 hectare WWF Macchiagrande protected area , which provides a habitat for numerous amphibians, reptiles and birds. Fregene and Passoscuro are popular seaside resorts for the population of the greater Rome area. Above all, Fregene is famous for its nightlife with its numerous discos.
On August 24, 2013, a new mud volcano was born on a roundabout between Fiumicino and Fiumicino Airport . Mud and gases, mainly carbon dioxide , leaked from two chimneys . Another, much larger mud volcano was formed at the end of September about 100 meters from the coast. The mud volcano at the roundabout, the crater of which reached a diameter of more than three meters, has since been filled in again by a specialist company, but the risk of renewed mud eruptions remains in the entire Tiber Delta .
The municipality includes the districts with the postcodes :
- 00050 Rome Fiumicino Airport , Aranova, Fregene, Palidoro, Passoscuro, Testa di Lepre and Torrimpietra
- 00054 Fiumicino, Focene and Isola Sacra
- 00057 Maccarese and Pantano di Grano
The community is located in earthquake zone 3 (little risk).
traffic
The A91 motorway connects Fiumicino with Rome. From here, the A12 Autostrada Azzurra branches off to Civitavecchia in the urban area .
Fiumicino Airport is easily accessible with the regional train FL1 (formerly FR1) via Rome-Tiburtina to Orte and the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini station . The Parco Leonardo station is also on the route . The branch line to Fiumicino City was closed in 2000.
The Maccarese-Fregene and Torrimpietra-Palidoro stations are on the Pisa – Rome line .
history
In 42 AD, Emperor Claudius founded a new port, Portus Romae , northwest of Ostia , which was expanded from 103 AD by Trajan with a hexagonal harbor basin (still visible south of the airport today). The port settlement Portus soon outstripped Ostia, when it was elevated to Colonia by Constantine the Great it probably had 30,000–40,000 inhabitants. Around this time Portus also became a bishopric. The diocese still exists today under the name Porto-Santa-Rufina . The decline of Portus began with the Migration Period, with the port remaining the most important port in Rome until the Middle Ages, when it was replaced by Civitavecchia .
The port of Trajan was connected to the Tiber by a canal called Flumen Micinum. The modern place name Fiumicino is derived from the name of this canal, which was only re-established as a municipality in 1825. Fiumicino was incorporated into Rome in the 20th century, but has been an independent city again since 1992, which is now the third largest city in the province of Rome with over 78,000 inhabitants.
Located in the municipal area of the city of Rome, the fascist regime established an internment camp ( campo di concentramento ) in 1941 , which served as a labor colony. It was on an estate in Castel di Guido, in the immediate vicinity of Fiumicino and Maccarese. The men interned mainly for political reasons were used as cheap labor for agricultural activities. Resistance was punished with imprisonment. The camp was only disbanded in autumn 1943.
