Nettuno is a municipality belonging to the metropolitan city of Rome in the Italian region of Lazio with 50,153 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The once unimportant fishing village is located on the Tyrrhenian Sea and is now a seaside resort.

history

Medieval old town

The name of the place goes back to the god Neptune , to whom a temple is said to have been dedicated on the site of today's church of San Giovanni . Saracens are said to have lived here in the 9th century . The Torre Astura was built in the 12th century on the ancient port that is still recognizable today . The city walls still partly preserved today were from 1501 to 1503 in which the Papal States belonging seaport by a bastioniertes Fort , designed by Giuliano da Sangallo added. In 1594 the place passed from the property of the monks of Grottaferrata to the papal Camera Apostolica. In 1832 the Borghese family acquired a considerable amount of land and in 1833 received the title of Prince of Nettuno; she still owns the Villa Costaguti-Borghese today.

In 1902 St. Maria Goretti was buried in Nettuno and in 1929 transferred to the Marian Shrine, where she rests in the crypt today .

During the Second World War, the city was fiercely contested and suffered severe damage. On January 22, 1944, the area around Nettuno was the scene of Operation Shingle , the Allied amphibious landing operation . The VI was mainly involved in the operation. American Corps under Major General John P. Lucas involved. The aim of the Americans was to bypass the German main line of defense in central Italy in order to accelerate the advance on Rome. The operation and the following skirmishes are also known as the Battle of Anzio-Nettuno, in which the 29th SS-Waffen-Grenadier-Division inflicted heavy losses on the Allies. In Nettuno rest on the Sicily – Rome American Cemetery and Memorial 7,860 US soldiers who were killed in the landings in Sicily , Salerno , Anzio and Nettuno.
