Sicily – Rome American Cemetery and Memorial
Sicily – Rome American Cemetery and Memorial (Italian: Cimitero americano di Nettuno ) is a military cemetery near Nettuno in Italy .
In an area of 31 hectares , 7,860 US soldiers are buried during the landings in Sicily (July 10 - August 17, 1943), Salerno (September 9, 1943) and Anzio and Nettuno (January 22 - May 1944 ) fell (→ Allied invasion of Italy ).
The names of 3,095 missing US soldiers are engraved on the marble walls of a chapel.
In May 2014, a 232 square meter visitor center was opened to give visitors a better understanding of the battles and their significance for the Allied invasion through photos, films and personal stories.
Every year on November 2nd ( All Souls' Day ) a commemorative mass is held in the cemetery. Pope Francis and some popes before him participated in it.
