Gallicano nel Lazio is an Italian commune in the metropolitan city of Rome , in the Lazio region with 6468 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 31 km east of Rome and borders the municipalities of Palestrina , Rome and Zagarolo .
The name is probably derived from the late Roman consul Flavius Gallicanus and not from the Italian word Gallo for rooster , which nevertheless became the heraldic animal of the community based on an incredible legend.
geography
Gallicano lies on a long, narrow tuff hill between two river valleys on the south side of the Monti Prenestini. It is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Castelli Romani e Prenestini .
history
The hill on which Gallicano lies was probably inhabited as early as pre-Roman times. 417 BC BC he came under Roman rule. The ordinary consul of the year 330 AD, Flavius Gallicanus, seems to have owned this place and is probably the namesake of the place, whose previous name is unknown. In the late 10th century, the place was fortified, as can be seen from a document in which Emperor Otto III. donated to the monastery of Sant'Andrea al Celio in Rome. In the early 12th century, Gallicano came to the Colonna family . In 1622 they sold the place to the Ludovisi , who in 1670 sold it to the Rospigliosi - Pallavicini .
The San Pastore estate has been owned by the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum since 1845 . 1848 Gallicano went legally to the Papal State on whose fate the place announced since then.

coat of arms
On a blue sign a rooster in natural colors on a green ground. At the top left is a six-pointed silver star. It is a talking coat of arms , as the name "Gallicano" is derived from the Latin "Gallus canit" (the cock crows).
